Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Take Two from OVU Scots; Benard Sets NCAA Era Saves Record

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (12-4, 8-0 Great Midwest) won game one, 3-1, with Ohio Valley University (3-17, 1-13 Great Midwest). Trevecca won game two, 10-2. The Trojans are 8-2 in their last 10 games. 

Trojan Jay Benard earned the save in game one, setting an NCAA Era record for Trevecca.

City Park Baseball Field in nearby Parkersburg (W.Va.) is hosting the weekend series.    

With his fourth save of the year, Jay Benard set the NCAA Era saves record. Benard owns 11 career saves, moving him one ahead of Mason Dunn. Steven Brown is the all-time Trevecca (NAIA/NCAA) record holder with 15 career saves. Benard is alone in second on the all-time list. Benard picked up seven saves during the 2018-2019 season. He is 3-0 all-time with a 4.78 earned run average. He has struck out 47 and walked just 16.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

When the four-game weekend series is completed the Trojan and Scots will have met 29 times. The Trojans own a ten-game win streak in the series and lead the series 24-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GM 1

The Trojans picked up their first run on an RBI-double from Ethan Harrison, scoring David Milam in the top of the second inning.

After a solo home run in the fourth from Scot Lizandro Garcia, tied the game 1-1, John O'Dwyer singled to right in the Trojan half of the fifth, driving in Joseph McNamee. Bryant Goolsby followed with a sac fly, scoring Ethan Harrison.

GM 2

Over the first three innings of game two, the bats for both teams remained silent, but the Trojan bats came alive in the fourth with a run on John O'Dwyer's third home run of the season. A solo blast, putting the Trojans up 1-0 and giving O'Dwyer his 17th RBI of the year.

In the fifth, the Trojans scored seven runs, the first two runs came on wild pitches. The first scored Joseph McNamee and the second Ethan Harrison. Bryant Goolsby followed with a two-RBI single setting the table for Braden Reece. Reece drove in Goolsby with a two-run home run. Ethan Harrison, batting for the second time in the fifth, hit a SAC fly to drive in Chad Marsh.

The Trojans gave up a run in the bottom of the fifth but led 8-1 going to the sixth.

In the sixth, Ryan Mortensen singled to drive in two more, scoring Shawn Wallwork and John Anderson. The Scots added a run in the sixth for the 10-2 final

STATS REPORT

GM 1

Chase Haley (2-0) picked up the win with six innings of work. Haley collected 10 strikeouts and allowed six hits, a run, and delivered two walks. Benard's record-setting save came following a perfect ninth inning of work that included two strikeouts. Ethan Harrison went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored, a double, and an RBI.

GM 2

Davis Jackson (1-2) started and picked up the win with five innings of work. Jackson allowed four hits and a run with one walk and two strikeouts. Chase Douglas and Andrew Blount closed it out with two innings, and inning each, of work including three strikeouts. Trevecca pounded out 12 hits with John O'Dwyer, Shawn Wallwork, and Joseph McNamee getting two hits apiece. In addition to his solo home run, O'Dwyer added a double.

WHAT'S NEXT

Trevecca and Ohio Valley team up for another Great Midwest doubleheader on Saturday, also with an 11 AM first pitch. The games will not have live video, but live stats will be available for both games.   

Lake Erie College (3-12, 1-7 Great Midwest) is next on the schedule, the Storm host the Trojans in Painesville, Ohio for a pair of doubleheaders April 10-11.
