Baseball | Trevecca Sweeps Thoroughbreds, Host Alan Smith Classic Next

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (3-2) swept a double header from visiting Kentucky State University (0-8) 8-3 and 13-0. Both games were scheduled 7-inning affairs. Trevecca will host the Alan Smith Classic @ Trevecca on Friday and Saturday at TNU's Jackson Field.

Game One
The first four batters (Nick Howell, Tyler Tichenor, Hunter Newman, Luke Fennell) in Trevecca's lineup combined to go 5-for-15 with three runs scored and five RBI. Newman added a double and Tichenor a triple. Newman also had a stolen base while Tichenor drew a walk.

Rob Rowland (1-0) pitched the opening five innings for the win and Ryan Shultz came on for the final two innings. Rowland allowed just two hits, four walks, and one run while sitting down four Thoroughbred batters on strikes.   

Trevecca scored three in the second and four in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. KSU struck for a run in the fifth. TNU added their final run in the sixth before allowing giving up two Thoroughbred runs in the top of the seventh.

AJ Garza-Hall (0-1) took the loss for Kentucky State. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three hits, three walks, and five runs. He struck out two Trojan batters.

Game Two
The second game started slowly for both teams, but the Trojans set the tone for a sweep with a four-run third that was fueled by a three-RBI double by freshman Ethan Hurt. Hurt finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

Nick Howell carried his hot bat into game two with a 2-for-3 effort that included two runs, three RBI, a double, a walk, a stolen base, and also reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Hunter Newman (2-5), Tyler Tichenor (2-4), Cameron Boyett (2-4), and Ryan Arington (2-3) all had two hit games along with Howell and Hurt.

In all the Trojans had 13 hits in 30 at bats. Arington scored three times and also reached on a hit by pitch.

John Bolton (1-0) earned his first career win pitching the first four innings. He allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out four. Michael Donaldson pitched a perfect fifth inning. Alex Shoulders closed out the game with two innings of work. Shoulders allowed a hit and had four strikeouts.

Trevecca will host the Alan Smith Classic @ Trevecca on Friday and Saturday. Prior to Friday's 3:00 p.m. game with the Union University Bulldogs (4-3), Trevecca will honor Alan Smith. The Trojans will face Lewis University Flyers (0-0) in a game scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
