Trevecca Baseball | No. 25 Trojans Drop Two 1-Run Games to No. 15 UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. To win games and series against good teams, a baseball team has to minimize self-inflicted wounds. On Friday, the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team fell victim to some costly miscues as they dropped a pair of one-run games.

Trevecca (25-12, 16-7 GSC) held the lead after six innings in game one against the University of West Alabama (28-7, 18-5 GSC) and through four innings in game two, but in both cases, the Tigers rallied in the late innings to take the wins, 5-4 in game one and 2-1 in the second contest.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
UWA now leads the all-time series 5-2, and they have won three straight one-run games over the Trojans. Each of the five games the teams have played in the NCAA era of the Trojans' program has been a one-run game, and all five games have been played in Livingston.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

West Alabama cracked the seal on the second pitch of the ballgame from Jonah Smithson, as Rashad Robinson left the yard to straightaway left field to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead. From that point, though, Smithson settled in. He allowed a two-out double, but a pair of groundouts helped him keep the deficit at a single run.

In the third, Cade Martin was hit by a pitch with one away, and with Noah Boughton following him, head coach Chase Sain put on the hit-and-run. Boughton yanked a line drive down the right field line for a double, and Martin raced all the way around to score, and after three innings, the ballgame was knotted, 1-1.

The Tigers got runners to the corners with one away in the bottom of the fourth, as they looked to take the lead, but Jonah Smithson managed to wiggle off the hook. Tanner Jones ripped a line drive right back up the middle, but Smithson snared it for the second out of the inning, and he went back to the first base bag for the twin killing to keep the game level.

The Trojans sent the bottom of the order to the plate in the fifth, and after a strikeout to open the frame, the Trojans offense came to life. Landon Rogers lined his third homer of the season to left field, and on the very next pitch, Martin launched his 10th dinger as Trevecca took the lead 3-1. A single from Boughton put another run on base, and he moved up to third on an errant pick off throw from Baker Green. Cade Moore followed with an RBI single for the Trojans' fourth straight hit, and Boughton trotted home to cap the inning and push the Trevecca lead to 4-1.

West Alabama threatened to trim the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers loaded the bases with one away, but Smithson induced a grounder to Caleb Webster at second, who flipped to Rogers at second to start the 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to preserve the margin.

Smithson again found himself in trouble in the bottom of the seventh, and this time, the Tigers broke through. West Alabama loaded the bases with one out, and Hudson Walburn doubled in a pair to chase Smithson from the game. Justin Lee entered the game, and he quickly retired Nick Wilson on a fly out to left field for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch, though, allowed the tying run to score from third, but Lee got a ground out to second to end the threat, and the Trojans got out of the frame in a tie game, 4-4.

The game proceeded scoreless into the ninth, and the Trojans got a two-out base hit to put the go-ahead run on base, but the Trojans were unable to do anything with the opportunity, and in the bottom half, the Tigers sent the top of the order to the plate. A lead-off single, a wild-pitch, and an error put runners at the corners with nobody out, and after Lee got a foul pop out for out number one, West Alabama got an infield single that plated the winning run as the Tigers took the series opener 5-4.

GAME 2
Trevecca immediately had to scramble in the second inning of game two after starting pitcher Spencer Wilkins was hit with a line drive and had to leave the game. Corbin Crosby relieved Wilkins and he escaped the inning unscathed, and in the third inning, the Trojans struck first.

Rogers drew a lead off walk, and Miles Nelson followed and was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice and an error loaded the bases with no one out for Martin, and he lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Rogers and gave the Trojans the 1-0 lead.

Trevecca held the lead into the bottom of the fifth, when with one away Rashad Robinson reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then stole third. After a walk put runners at the corners, back to back singles scored a pair of runs, and UWA took the lead 2-1.

The Trojans went in order in the sixth, and in the seventh, down to their final three outs, Luke Dymond singled to put the tying run on base. Wyatt Bowling pinch ran for Dymond, and with two outs in the inning, he stole second, but a called third strike to Nelson stranded him at second and preserved the Tigers' 2-1 win.
