Trevecca Baseball | Whitaker's Three Hits, Two RBIs Lift Trojans to Comeback win at C-N

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.  It's not how you start, it's how you finish. On Tuesday, for the second time this season against the Carson Newman University Eagles, the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team proved that age old maxim true.

Trevecca (27-12) did not get their first hit until the sixth inning on Tuesday at Carson Newman (21-16), but the Trojans erased a 3-0 deficit to take a comeback win over the Eagles for the second time in 2026, this one a 5-4 win in 11 innings. Senior Isaac Whitaker notched a season-high three hits in the game and knocked in a pair including the game winning tally.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
With the win, the Trojans inch ahead in the all-time series with Carson-Newman. Trevecca now holds a 6-5 all-time lead in the rivalry, and the Trojans have won three in a row and four of the last five games in the series - including two of the preceding three contests at C-N.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Carson-Newman struck first with a run in the bottom of the first on a one-out double, and the Eagles added single runs in the fourth and fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Drew Fletcher was cruising for the Eagles. The freshman righty retired 15 of the first 16 Trojans he faced, with only Isaac Whitaker reaching base on an error in the third frame.

Miles Nelson led off the sixth with the Trojans first hit of the game, a single to shortstop, and that helped the Trojans start a rally. Whitaker followed with a base hit to left field, and Cade Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Noah Boughton pulled a ground ball to first, and with the infield playing back, it allowed Nelson to score, and Whitaker and Martin to advance, as the Trojans cut the lead to 3-1. Carson-Newman went to the bullpen for Brock Culpepper, and he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Whitaker to race home and cut the deficit to 3-2, but a strikeout and a pick off ended the threat with the Eagles still in front.

The score remained unchanged into the eighth inning, but a two out walk to Boughton was followed by a double off the wall in left center for Caleb Webster, and Boughton raced all the way around from first to tie the game at 3-3. After Crosby held the Eagles off the board in the bottom of the inning, Whitaker bounced a two-out single up the middle in the ninth that scored Rylan Moses to put Trevecca on top 4-3.

The Trojans turned the ball over to Ryan Sweeney, but with two away, a double to left allowed the Eagles to knot the score at 4-4. Sweeny buckled down and prevented further damage in the frame, and the game proceeded into extra innings.

Both teams went down in order in the 10th, but in the 11th, Moses started things off with a single through the left side of the infield. Luke Dymond was hit by a pitch, and Alex Fernandez stepped in to try to sacrifice the runners into second and third. Fernandez popped up the bunt, and while it was not caught, the runners had to hold on the play, and Moses was retired at third on the 2-5 fielder's choice. The Trojans pinch ran for Dymond with Wyatt Bowling, and Nelson followed with a hot smash that ricocheted off the pitcher, who recovered to get Miles at first for the second out, though the runners moved up to second and third. That brought Whitaker to the plate, and the freshman hit a two-hop rocket to the left of the third baseman who dove to keep it on the infield, but his throw to first was just off the mark and Whitaker reached on the infield single to give Trevecca the 5-4 lead.

Aaron McCoy headed out for his second inning of work in the bottom of the 11th. He induced a soft groundout to Jaxson Christ to lead off the inning, and Fernandez made an outstanding running catch in right, slamming into the wall in the process, for out number two. A two-out single kept the inning alive, but McCoy was able to retire pinch-hitter Sean Strittmatter on a ground out to short to preserve the 5-4 win.
