WEST POINT, Miss. — Maddox Burton opened the Samuel T. Dunning Invitational with consecutive under-par rounds Monday, leading the Trevecca Nazarene University men's golf team through the opening 36 holes at Mossy Oak Golf Club.
Burton carded rounds of 71 and 69 for a four-under-par 140 through two rounds on the par-72, 6,821-yard layout.
The Trojans opened with a 297 before improving by one stroke with a 296 in the second round. Trevecca is 10th in the 11-team field with a 593 total entering Tuesday's final round.
Burton produced 10 of Trevecca's 26 birdies Monday. He is tied for third in the field in birdies, tied for fourth in par-4 scoring at 3.80, four under par, and leads the field in par-5 scoring with a 4.50 average, also four under par.
After opening with a one-under-par 71, Burton went even lower in the afternoon with a three-under-par 69. He made five birdies in each round.

MADDOX BURTON
Burton was under par in both rounds and closed the day with a four-under-par 140.
His opening one-under-par 71 included five birdies. He followed with five more during his three-under-par 69 in the second round.
Burton played the front nine of the second round in two-under-par 34 and came home in one-under-par 35.
He is tied for third among the 60-player field with 10 birdies.
Burton is tied for fourth in par-4 scoring, playing those holes four under par with a 3.80 scoring average.
He leads the field in par-5 scoring, playing those holes four under par with a 4.50 scoring average.
Burton's 71 and 69 give him two par-or-better rounds in the tournament.
LAIRD WILLIAMS
Williams improved three strokes between rounds, following an opening three-over-par 75 with an even-par 72.
He made five birdies over the opening 36 holes, including four during his second round.
Williams made the turn at even-par 36 in Round Two and played the back nine in even-par 36.
His second-round 72 gives Williams one par-or-better round in the tournament.
WILSON BORDERS
Borders returned to competition after being named the Gulf South Conference Men's Golfer of the Week following his performance at last week's Griffin Invitational.
The junior finished fifth at the Griffin Invitational with a one-under-par 215, posting rounds of 70, 73 and 72 while leading Trevecca to a third-place team finish. Borders made nine birdies and 37 pars during the tournament.
Borders added eight birdies Monday at Mossy Oak, carding rounds of 76 and 74 for a six-over-par 150.
Five of his birdies came during the opening round. He added three in Round Two, including birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18 while playing his closing nine in one-under-par 35.
CONNER WILLIAMS
Williams opened the tournament with a three-over-par 75 before carding a nine-over-par 81 in the afternoon round.
He made three birdies during the day, two in the opening round and another in Round Two.
JIRI KINNUNEN
Kinnunen posted rounds of 78 and 82 for a 16-over-par 160.
While birdies were difficult to find Monday, Kinnunen consistently put pars on the card. His 23 pars are second-most in the 60-player field through 36 holes.
TROJAN TEAM NOTES
Trevecca posted rounds of 297 and 296 for a 593 total.
The Trojans improved by one stroke in the afternoon, with Burton providing the team's low round with his three-under-par 69.
Trevecca's five players combined for 26 birdies over Monday's 36 holes.
Burton accounted for 10 birdies, while Borders added eight. Together, the pair produced 18 of the team's 26 birdies.
Two Trojans produced par-or-better rounds Monday. Burton did it twice with rounds of 71 and 69, while Laird Williams added an even-par 72.
