HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Trevecca Nazarene University men's golf made a six-position climb during Monday's opening 36 holes of the Griffin Invitational at Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course.
The 54-hole event features 10 teams and 65 individuals competing on the par-72, 7,015-yard course. The final 18 holes are scheduled for Tuesday.
Trevecca opened with a 298 and was 10th following the first round, but the Trojans responded with a three-under-par 285 in round two, the third-best team score of the second round.
The 13-stroke improvement moved Trevecca from 10th to fourth with a 583 (+7) entering Tuesday's final round.
The 285 was the third-best team round of the afternoon and moved Trevecca six positions into fourth place entering Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Wilson Borders leads the Trojans individually and is tied for seventh at one-under-par 143 -1 (70-73). Borders opened with a two-under-par 70 and followed with a 73.
Maddox Burton provided the biggest second-round surge, bouncing back from an opening 78 with a four-under-par 68. His 68 was Trevecca's low round Monday and moved him into a tie for 20th with a 146 +2 (78-68).
Burton also recorded Trevecca's eagle and leads the Trojans with nine birdies through 36 holes, the fifth-most in the field.
MORE TROJAN NOTES
Junior Wilson Borders is tied for seventh after rounds of 70 and 73 for a one-under-par 143. His opening 70 establishes his 2026-27 season low. Borders owns a Trevecca career-low round of 66, a career-best 36-hole score of 140 and a career-best 54-hole total of 211. The 66 is tied for the third lowest round in school history.
Borders was especially effective on the par-four holes Monday, ranking ninth in the field at one-over-par with a 4.05 scoring average.
Laird Williams is tied for 18th with a one-over-par 145 (74-71). Williams improved three strokes during the afternoon round, closing with a one-under-par 71.
The 71 matches Williams' Trevecca career-low round, originally established during the 2026 Music City Invitational. His 145 through 36 holes also matches his Trevecca career-best 36-hole score.
Williams collected eight birdies during Monday's two rounds, second-most among the Trojans.
Senior Maddox Burton is tied for 20th at two-over-par 146 (78-68) after producing Trevecca's biggest turnaround of the day.
Burton cut 10 strokes from his opening round with a four-under-par 68 in round two. The 68 is his season low and is two strokes off his Trevecca career-low round of 66.
Burton was also one of the top players in the field on the par-five holes, ranking fifth at four-under-par with a 4.05 scoring average.
His nine birdies lead Trevecca and rank fifth in the field through 36 holes. Burton also recorded the Trojans' lone eagle Monday.
Andrew Reeves is tied for 40th with a 151 (+7) after rounds of 76 and 75.
Reeves was among the best players in the field on the par-three holes, ranking second at two-under-par with a 2.75 scoring average.
He recorded seven birdies during Monday's two rounds. His Trevecca career-low round remains the three-under-par 67 he produced at the 2026 Music City Invitational.
Ryan Applin produced one of Trevecca's biggest improvements in the second round. After opening with an 83, Applin cut 10 strokes and posted a one-over-par 73 to finish the day tied for 53rd at 156 (+12).
The 73 matches Applin's Trevecca career-low round, originally established during the final round of the 2026 Music City Invitational.
Jiri Kinnunen opened his Trevecca career with rounds of 81 and 78 and is tied for 61st at 159 (+15).
Kinnunen improved three strokes in the second round and recorded both of his Monday birdies during the afternoon round. The 78 establishes his early Trevecca season and career low.
TROJAN TEAM NOTES
Trevecca finished the opening 36 holes fifth in the field on the par-three holes with a 3.17 scoring average.
The Trojans were fourth on the par-four holes with a 4.21 scoring average and eighth on the par-five holes at three-over-par with a 5.06 average.
Trevecca collected 36 birdies through the opening two rounds, the fourth-most in the field, along with 120 pars.
The Trojans also recorded one eagle, supplied by Burton.
Because the Griffin Invitational is Trevecca's opening event of the 2026-27 season, Monday's tournament birdie totals are also the season totals.
