Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Offense Awakens, Trevecca Unable to Find Victory at UAH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Hitters for the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team have really enjoyed facing pitchers from the University of Alabama-Huntsville since joining the Gulf South Conference a season ago. The Trojans have put up 42 runs in five meetings between the two teams as conference foes, and on Friday, a second TNU hitter recorded a three homer game against the Chargers.

Cade Martin blasted a trio of homers in game one of the double-header between Trevecca (28-16, 18-11 GSC) and UAH (19-21, 14-15 GSC) on Friday, but while the offense came to life, the Trojans were unable to find a win on the afternoon, as they dropped the games 11-7 and 9-8.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
UAH now surges in front in the all-time series with a record of 11-9. The Chargers have been particularly successful in the series in Huntsville, where with Friday's two wins, UAH is now 11-2 all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

Batting in the number two spot in the game, Cade Martin continued his torrid offensive season in the top of the first, and it became a theme in the game. Martin lifted the seventh pitch of the game over the center field wall for a solo home run, and before he even stepped on the mound, Logan Harrell was staked to a 1-0 lead.

Noah Boughton added two runs to that advantage with a two-single with the bases loaded that plated Alex Fernandez and Caleb Webster. The Trojans appeared on their way to a series opening win, but at that point, the offense slipped into neutral.

Harrell allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as UAH cut the deficit to 3-2, but he recovered and held the lead for the time being. In the fourth, though, a one-out homer from UAH's Taylor Bush leveled the game at 3-3, and that remained the score into the sixth. With two away in the UAH sixth frame, a two-out error allowed the Chargers to plate the go-ahead run, and in the seventh, UAH broke the game open.

Harrell quickly got the first batter of the inning out, and he struck out CJ Carson for what would have been out number two, but the ball got away on a passed ball, and Carson reached base safely. After a single on a hit-and-run, back to back walks ended Harrell's day down 5-3. Justin Lee entered in relief, and he fanned the first man he faced for what would have been out number three. With the inning still alive though, three straight hits off Lee allowed five UAH runs to score and the game broke open and took a 10-3 lead.

Martin stepped in and led off the top of the eighth with another long solo homer, and later in the inning, Webster drew a free pass with the sacks packed to cut the deficit to 10-5. After UAH picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, Rylan Moses led off the top of the ninth with a single, and he came around to score on Martin's third home run of the day - this one to right center - as Trevecca cut the gap to four at 11-7. After a pitching change, Drew Bradley singled with one out in the frame, but the Trojans did not get another baserunner aboard, and TNU dropped the series opener, 11-7.

Martin's 3-homer game was the first such performance since Cade Moore did it to the Chargers on April 18, 2025 in game one of the double-header at Jackson Field.

GAME 2
Trevecca struck first in game two as well, this time, without Martin being involved. Rylan Moses led off the game with a single, and he stole second, then moved to third on a ground out from Drew Bradley. Boughton followed with an RBI double off the base of the wall that allowed Moses to trot home and put Trevecca up 1-0. Trevecca, though, had chances to add on to the lead in the first, and the third, and they came away empty. In the bottom of the third, the Chargers took advantage.

UAH got an RBI ground out to tie the score in the frame, but it gave the Trojans the opportunity to get out of the inning level as it marked the second out in the frame. A walk and a hit batsman, though, loaded the bases, and back-to-back RBI hits plated four more runs as UAH pulled ahead 5-1. A lead-off double for UAH in the sixth led to another run as the Chargers opened a five-run cushion, but in the fifth, the Trojans struck again.

Moses led off with a single, and Martin reached on an error to put two on with nobody out. Bradley followed with an RBI double that scored Moses, and Boughton ripped his own two-run two-bagger to score Martin and Bradley, and suddenly, Trevecca was within two. A walk put the tying run aboard, and Isaac Whitaker hit the ball hard, but right to the first baseman for an unassisted double play that allowed UAH to wiggle off the hook.

The Chargers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead back to 8-4, and that is where the score remained into the seventh. After a strikeout of Martin started the Trojans' final opportunity, Bradley reached on an error and Boughton walked to bring the tying run into the on-deck circle. A pop-out put UAH on the precipice of the victory, but a single from Whitaker plated Bradley and Ethan Madison strode to the plate as the potential tying tally. On the first pitch he saw, Madison launched a long 3-run homer to left that drew the Trojans level at 8-8.

In the bottom of the inning, though, a lead-off walk and a wild pitch put the winning run in scoring position with no one out. UAH sacrificed the runner to third, and after an intentional walk to set up a double-play chance, the Chargers' Hugh Windle singled back up the middle to drive in the winning run as UAH took the win, 9-8.

GSC Race Update

The losses all but eliminate the Trojans from regular season title contention. Trevecca is three games behind West Alabama with only four games remaining, and the Tigers hold the tiebreaker with Trevecca. With their wins on Friday, both Lee and Mississippi College also leap-frogged the Trojans, who now sit in fourth in the GSC 1.5 games behind the second place Flames and a half-game in back of the Choctaws. The wins for UAH also helped solidify their position as the final team in the GSC Championship with four games left. The Chargers are now 2.5 games up on Valdosta State for the final postseason berth with four games to go - though the Blazers hold the tiebreaker over the Chargers.

NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Trevecca will try to salvage the series finale on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for Noon.
