Trevecca Athletics | Trojans Remember Early Sports Information Director Glenn English

NASHVILLE – Glenn English chronicled Trevecca Nazarene University's early intercollegiate teams and spent decades championing those players and coaches who helped build Trojan athletics.
English died last week after a long battle with cancer. He served as Trevecca's sports information director from 1971 to 1974.
"College Sports Communicators Membership Appreciation Week is a fitting time to honor Glenn's life and work," said Gregory Ruff, Trevecca's assistant athletic director for communication and broadcasting. "He spent his life giving others credit and preserving their accomplishments. Those of us who followed are still benefiting from his work."
One of his lasting contributions was the 2021 Trevecca Homecoming reunion and recognition of Trevecca's first championship team, the 1971–72 men's basketball Trojans.

English conceived the gathering and worked tirelessly to bring it to life, even while battling cancer. He helped bring the team coached by Chet Foraker back to the Hill so the players and coaches could celebrate their place in Trevecca history together.

A VOICE FOR THE EARLY TROJANS

An Oct. 8, 1971 story in the Trevechoes introduced English as a transfer from Mount Vernon Nazarene College and Trevecca's new sports information director, responsible for news releases and sports promotion. He covered the Trojans from the 1971-72 through 1973-74 seasons, during a formative stretch for what was then Trevecca Nazarene College.
His coverage extended across the athletic department. The 1971–72 basketball team won the Southern Christian Athletic Conference regular-season title. Baseball, led by head coach Bill Green, recorded its first winning season in 1972 and its first SCAC championship in 1973.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE RECORD

In his Jan. 31, 1973, Trevechoes column, "Does A Record Tell It All?" English looked beyond the box score to the demands of practice and travel, the loyalty of players and the pressures coaches carried. His appeal for "more credit, appreciation, and encouragement to the players" reflected his belief that a season's story started well before the start of a game and extended beyond the final whistle.

KEEPING THOSE CONNECTIONS ALIVE

English continued sharing his knowledge and records with those who came later. He helped spearhead reunions for Trevecca teams, Mount Vernon teams and his high school, bringing friends and teammates back together to celebrate their experiences.
"Glenn was generous with his knowledge and his work, and no one could question his passion for Trevecca teams from his era," Ruff said. "He loved bringing people together and celebrating them. I learned a great deal from him."
"I'm grateful to Glenn and everyone who helped document our early years," Ruff said. "Those of us who followed have a clearer picture of our history because they cared enough to preserve it and share it."
English helped put Trevecca's early teams in the record book and kept their stories alive long after their playing days ended. The Trojans' former scribe earned his own lasting place in the Purple and White history books he helped create.
