Trevecca Baseball | Late-Inning Homers Spur Comeback as Trojans Take Out LMU 11-6

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Through the first five innings on Tuesday afternoon, the Trevecca Trojans offense was stuck in neutral. The Trojans were able to generate base runners early, but they were unable to get much production going against the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters.

In the bottom of the sixth frame, that all changed.

Trevecca (25-10) trailed 4-1 after five and a half innings, but a home run from Rylan Moses in the bottom of the sixth set the stage for a 10-run explosion in the Trojans' final three trips to the dish, and Trevecca rallied to defeat LMU (23-12) 11-6.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The win for Trevecca levelled the season series as one win apiece after LMU had taken a 7-6 win in Harrogate, Tennessee on February 25. All-time, LMU retains the series lead, 10-5, but the Trojans have now won two of the last three meetings between the ballclubs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Landon Rogers got the Trojans on the board first with a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the second inning that drove in Moses, but in the top of the fourth, LMU surged in front with a one-out grand slam from CJ Dugan that gave the Railsplitters the 4-1 lead.

Following the RBI double in the second from Rogers, the Trojans suffered through a stretch of 11 straight hitters being retired - though Noah Boughton did reach on an error in the third before he was erased on a double play. In the bottom of the sixth, though, it was Boughton who snapped that string. He singled to the pitcher, and that set the stage for Moses to pull the 2-run homer down the line in right field, and the Trojans were suddenly within one at 4-3.

Brady Mores of LMU answered with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to restore a lead of 6-3, but after another leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth - this one from Jaxson Christ - Cade Martin launched his team-leading ninth dinger of the season to left center, and again the Trojans found themselves in a 1-run game, trailing 6-5.

Kayne Jinks entered on the mound for the Trojans in the eighth, and he worked a quick inning to keep the margin at one before he turned it back over to the now awakened Trevecca offense, and the Trojans immediately repaid him for the favor. Caleb Webster led off the inning with a home run to tie the game at 6-6, and Drew Bradley followed two pitches later with a round tripper to left center that gave Trevecca the lead back at 7-6.

Moses, Tyler Jenkins and Rogers each drew walks following the homers, and with the bases loaded and one away, Isaac Whitaker doubled to right and scored Moses and Jenkins to push the Trevecca lead to 9-6. Martin was intentionally passed to re-load the bases, but the strategy back-fired, as Boughton and Webster followed with RBIs to cap the six-run inning, and put the Trojans up 11-6.

Coach Sain did not take any chances with the lead, and even in a non-save spot, he brought in closer Ryan Sweeney to finish the job. While Sweeney did allow a single and a walk, neither runner made it past second base as Sweeney picked up two strikeouts in sealing the 11-6 win.
