Trevecca Baseball | Trojans settle for Split in DH, Tied atop GSC with UWA, UWF

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team settled for a split of a double-header on Saturday afternoon, and as the season heads to the month of April, the Trojans now find themselves in a logjam at the top of the Gulf South Conference standings. With four series remaining in the conference year, the Trojans are in a three-way tie atop the GSC standings, and they have all of their goals still in front of them.

Trevecca (24-10, 16-5 GSC) salvaged the third game of the weekend against Christian Brothers University (9-24, 4-17 GSC) with a 13-6 win in game two of Saturday's twin bill. The Buccaneers rallied to win game one 10-7.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES      
With the double-header split, Trevecca is now 37-18 all-time against CBU. The Trojans have won four of the six games played in the NCAA-era of the series, and the win in the series finale was the first for the Trojans in Memphis since the final game of their last series at CBU - April 12-13, 1996.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1      
As in the series opener, Trevecca struck in the top of the first inning. Cade Martin doubled to start the game, and Caleb Webster followed with an infield single. A Cade Moore sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, and Noah Boughton drew a walk to load the bases with only one away. Drew Bradley drew a walk to score Martin, and Rylan Moses followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Webster as the Trojans took a 2-0 lead. 

CBU tallied a run in the bottom of the third to pull within a single run at 2-1, but in the top of the fourth Trevecca pushed the lead to four. Martin singled and Webster walked, then Moor followed with a triple to left field that plated both runners and made it 4-1 Trevecca. After a walk to Boughton, Bradley lifted a sacrifice fly to center that plated Moore and the Trojans lead increased to 5-1.

CBU cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but a Boughton Sac fly in the sixth, and a Tyler Jenkins RBI double in the seventh put Trevecca up 7-2 with only six outs to get.

In the bottom of the eighth, though, CBU rallied. CBU got a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-3, and after an infield single, Trevecca managed to get an out on the bases to leave a runner at first with two away and a four run lead. Unfortunately for Trevecca, the next seven men reached, and by the time the inning concluded, CBU had plated eight runs to take a 10-7 lead.

The Trojans got a lead-off walk from Bradley and a single from Moses, but Bradley was retired on the play, and though the Trojans did bring the tying run to the plate later in the inning, they were unable to push anything across as the Trojans fell 10-7.

GAME 2
Trevecca took out their frustrations on the Buccaneers in game three. The first two innings went by scoreless, but in the third, the Trojans broke the game wide open. Martin belted a one-out double, Moses walked, and Moore drove in Martin with a double of his own. Boughton singled home Moses, and the Trojans executed a double steal that allowed Moore to score. Consecutive walks to Webster and Luke Dymond loaded the bases, and Landon Rogers singled to drive in Webster and Boughton and chase CBU starter Cameron Olivo from the game.

The pitching chande did little to slow the Trojans, though, as Jaxson Christ drew a walk, and Jenkins unloaded on a grand slam to cap the nine-run inning. CBU clawed a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Trojans got it right back in the fourth when Webster walked, Dymond was hit by a pitch, and on a double steal, Webster was able to take advantage of a throwing error to put Trevecca up 10-1. 

CBU closed to 10-4 in the bottom of the fourth, but in the sixth, Dymond doubled to lead off the inning, he later scored on a double from Jenkins, and Martin launched his team-leading eighth homer of the season to cap the Trojans' offensive day and push the Trevecca lead to 13-4. CBU managed two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but nothing further crossed the plate for either team, and the Trojans took the series finale 13-6.
