Trevecca Baseball | Trojans win Sixth Straight Series to open GSC Season; Split DH with MC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. It has been nearly 20 years since the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team has seen a start to the conference like they have seen this season. Entering this weekend, the last time the Trojans had won six or more conference series to start a season, they were in the TranSouth Athletic Conference, and the Trojans featured names like TNU Athletic Hall of Fame left-hander Luke Brown, and Hall of Fame Coach Chris Collins. On Saturday, Chase Sain and his current bunch of Trojans joined that elite group.

Trevecca (23-8, 15-3 GSC) took their series with Mississippi College (17-13, 11-7 GSC) on the strength of a 10-2 win in game one, and in the series finale, the Choctaws got a pair of home runs from Alex Johnson, and the Trojans were unable to complete the rally late as they dropped the third game 7-6. The six straight series wins are the second most in program history, trailing only that 2007 team who won seven straight in TranSouth play.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The series is the third so far this season that the Trojans have won to avenge a series loss the season before. The Trojans won series against Valdosta State, West Florida, and now Mississippi after having been swept by each of those teams in 2025. Mississippi College leads the all-time series with Trevecca 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

The teams went quietly in the first, but in the top of the second, back-to-back singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases against Trojans' starter Logan Harrell. The junior righty, though, buckled down and limited the damage. He got Creek Robertson to pop out to Landon Rogers in short left center, and after a sacrifice fly to Noah Boughton in foul territory in left field led to the Choctaws' first run, he froze JT Thigpen to end the inning with just the one run allowed.

In the bottom half, Cade Moore launched a one-out solo homer to left to tie the score, and in the bottom of the third, Trevecca took the lead without the benefit of a base hit. Rylan Moses led off the frame with a walk, and Cade Martin was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Caleb Webster laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the throw from Mississippi starter Coby Gollott went high and down the right field line, allowing both runners to score and Webster to advance to second. Two batters later, Webster came home on a sacrifice fly from Moore for the third run of the inning, and the Trojans took a 4-1 lead.

Webster belted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, and in the seventh, the Trojans plated four more runs - highlighted by Landon Rogers' second home run of the weekend. Rogers launched a three-run shot to left that cleared the net and pushed the Trevecca lead to 9-1. Alex Fernandez singled to follow Rogers, and he later came home on a base knock from Martin to give the Trojans a 10-1 lead.

On the mound, Harrell was brilliant. He pitched into and out of trouble in the second, but he went seven innings in the game. He scattered three hits and three walks, and he fanned nine Choctaws in earning his GSC-leading sixth win of the season.

Mississippi got a run off Parker Davis in the top of the eighth, but Davis limited the damage, and Kayne Jinks shut the door in the ninth, as the Trojans took the win 10-2.

GAME 2
Johnson got the scoring started in the Mississippi third inning, when he roped his first homer of the day to give the Choctaws the 2-0 lead, but Trevecca answered in the fourth.

Webster and Boughton hit consecutive singles to start the inning, and Moore walked to load the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch brought Webster across and moved the runners to second and third, then Dymond was plunked to reload the bases. After a pitching change, another wild pitch allowed Boughton to score and again moved the runners up, and one out later, Rogers drew a free pass to load the bases for Fernandez.

After a second pitching change in the inning, Fernandez ripped a first pitch double down the line in left to extend his hitting streak to seven games, and it plated two runs to put Trevecca on top 4-2. Moses followed with a single to center that chased home Rogers and put runners at the corners with still only one out. Martin then drew a four-pitch walk, and on the fourth offering, it kicked off the glove of the catcher for a passed ball that allowed Fernandez to score and cap the six-run inning.

Mississippi answered in the top of the fifth to tie the game with four runs, this time highlighted by a two-run homer from Tyler Sanderson that leveled the game at 6-6. In the sixth, Johnson launched a second homer to push the Mississippi lead to 9-6, but the Trojans did not quit.

Tyler Jenkins led off the six frame with a triple off the left field fence, and he scampered home on a wild pitch later in the inning. With Rogers at second, Moses was hit by a 3-1 pitch to put runners at first and second with one away, but Martin bounced into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat and send the game to the seventh.

Ryan Sweeney kept the margin at two with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, and in the bottom half, Webster led off with a single and Boughton doubled to put the tying runs in scoring position with nobody out. Moore grounded out to short for the first out of the inning, scoring Webster on the play, and Boughton was lifted for a pinch runner in Wyatt Bowling

After a strikeout, Jenkins stepped into the box, and he hit one off the fists to first base with Bowling running on the pitch. Jenkins raced to first base and dove in trying to beat the play, and he was initially ruled safe which appeared to allow Bowling to score the tying run. However, on review, the replay showed that Taylor Ballard's foot hit the base with the ball in his glove a fraction of a second before Jenkins' hand, and the call was overturned to preserve the Choctaws' 9-8 win.
