Trevecca Baseball | Lead Slips Away as Trojans Drop Series Opener to CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. In baseball, no matter who is in the other dugout, you have to bring a great effort to win every day. The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team found that out the hard way on Friday.

Trevecca (23-9, 15-4 GSC) dropped the series opener to Christian Brothers University (8-23, 3-16 GSC) 8-6 in a game that the Trojans led 5-0 in the middle of the fourth inning. The loss marked the first time all season that the Trojans had lost consecutive games in the GSC.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The loss for Trevecca is their first to CBU in the NCAA era of the program, as the Trojans had swept the series a season ago in Nashville. The Trojans are now 36-17 all-time against CBU, and the Bucs win was their first over the Trojans since a 5-3 win in game one of a double-header in Memphis on April 13, 1996.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Logan Harrell took the ball in the series opener for the first time in GSC play, and he was solid in his outing. The junior right-hander threw six innings and apart from one mistake, he was excellent. He yielded two earned runs on only six hits in the outing, and he fanned seven without issuing a walk.

Harrell was staked to an early lead in the top of the first. Cade Martin reached on an error, and one-out later Noah Boughton singled to keep the inning alive for Cade Moore. Moore blasted a 1-1 pitch to center for a 3-run home run to put Trevecca up 3-0. Martin lofted a sac fly to right in the second, and Boughton reached on an error with two outs in the fourth that allowed Rylan Moses to score to push the Trevecca lead to 5-0.

The Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Will Gossett homered to score a pair and cut the Trevecca lead to 5-2, but Boughton restored a 4-run margin in the top of the seventh when he led off the frame by launching a 2-0 pitch for a solo shot to right field that put Trevecca up 6-2.

Harrell was lifted in the bottom of the seventh, and the Buccaneers were able to take advantage against the Trevecca bullpen. The first five men all reached, and none of them put the ball in play as three walks and two hit batsmen helped the Bucs cut the deficit to 6-4. A strikeout put the Trojans in position to get out of the inning with the lead, but another walk made it 6-5, and a fielder's choice groundout allowed the tying run to score. Another hit batsman loaded the bases again, and a two-run single capped the six run frame for the Bucs as CBU took the 8-6 lead.

Trevecca got runners on base in both the eighth and the ninth, but they were unable to score either runner, and CBU took the surprising win, 8-6.
