Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Rally Late, Boughton Walks-Off Tusculum

NASHVILLE After a rough afternoon on Tuesday, the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team returned home to some late-inning drama at Jackson Field on Wednesday against Tusculum University. When the dust settled, The Trojans walked away with their second walk-off win of the season, and a season sweep of the Pioneers

Trevecca (21-7) rallied with two runs in the ninth, and in the 10 inning, Noah Boughton lined a walk-off single to right as Trevecca completed the home-and-home sweep of Tusculum (9-17) with a 9-8 win in 10 innings.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Trevecca now holds a 6-4 all-time series lead over the Pioneers. The Trojans swept the series this season, and they have won all four meetings in Nashville against the Pioneers. Trevecca also beat Tusculum at Jackson Field in 2017 (13-10) and 2014 (9-8) in regular season play, and in 1993 in the NAIA District 24 Tournament (10-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans scored first and built an early 3-0 lead. Boughton picked up an RBI single that scored Cade Moore in the bottom of the first inning with two outs, and in the second frame, Rylan Moses lined a triple inside the bag at first base that chased home Landon Rogers and Miles Nelson

After Tusculum scored twice in the top of the third to cut the gap to a single run, Cade Martin and Caleb Webster drew bases loaded walks in the bottom of the fourth, and Boughton reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Moses to give the Trojans a 6-2 lead, but Tusculum did not go quietly.

The Pioneers closed the margin to one again with three runs in the top of the fifth, and in the sixth, Tusculum scored twice to take a 7-6 lead. Trevecca loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two away, and the Trojans appeared to have tied the game when Nick Cook initially looked to have been hit by a pitch to force in a run, but on replay, it was ruled a foul ball, and Cook was unable to extend the frame. Tusculum extended the lead in the top of the eighth with a single run to push their lead to 8-6, and they took that lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Down to their final two outs, with the bases empty, Cook was plunked and lifted for a pinch runner, Wyatt Bowling. Bowling then raced to second on a great read on a pitch in the dirt, eliminating the force play and putting himself in scoring position. Pinch hitter Drew Bradley lined a double into the left-center gap to chase home Bowling, and he was replaced by pinch runner Elijah Cross. Landon Rogers then singled to left to score Cross, and he took second on the throw, putting the winning run in scoring position with only one out. Tusculum went to the bullpen, though, and they escaped the inning to force extra frames.

Tusculum put the go-ahead run on base in the top of the 10th when the lead off batter reached on a Trevecca miscue, but Justin Lee buckled down to slam the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the top of the inning. In the bottom half, Martin worked a leadoff walk after being down in the count 0-2, and Webster followed with a rocket single off the leg of the Pioneers' pitcher putting runners at first and second with no one out. That brought Boughton to the plate, and with the count level at 2-2, Boughton yanked a single into right field down the line. Martin raced around third and slid in ahead of the tag with the winning run as the Trojans completed the comeback for the 9-8 win.
