Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Blank Choctaws 5-0 in Series Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team opened a critical Gulf South Conference weekend series at home on Friday evening when they welcomed the Mississippi College Choctaws to Jackson Field. The two teams entered play battling near the top of the GSC Standings, and as the calendar shifts to the second half of the season, both teams knew that the series opener was crucial. In the end, the Trojans pitching staff shined brightly, and the bats did enough to help the ball club take game one.

Trevecca (22-7, 14-2 GSC) got strong efforts from three different arms, and two, two-run innings in the middle of the game provided much of the difference,as the Trojans beat the Choctaws (17-11, 10-6 GSC), 5-0.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The win was the Trojans' first in four tries against the Choctaws, and in fact, it marked the first time Trevecca held Mississippi out of double digits. The Choctaws scored at least 12 runs in each of their three wins in last year's series, the only other meetings between the teams before Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The pitchers controlled the first three innings. The teams combined for just two baserunners in the first three frames, as Caleb Peterson and Jonah Smithson combined for nine strikeouts in those three frames.

Trevecca cracked the scoreboard in the fourth, and the method they used to do so was a familiar one. Cade Martin led off the inning with a single, and Caleb Webster followed with a base hit of his own to put runners at first and second with no one out. Noah Boughton sacrificed them to second and third with one down, and Cade Moore singled Martin and Webster home to put Trevecca up 2-0.

In the fifth, Landon Rogers launched his first collegiate long ball to lead off the inning, and later in the frame, Martin lined his team-leading seventh homer to right-center, and the Trojans' lead was doubled to 4-0.

Trevecca pitching was outstanding on the day. Three Trojans' hurlers combined to allow only five baserunners in the game, including only two hits in the combined shutout. Jonah Smithson, Justin Lee, and Ryan Sweeney walked only one batter between them, and they fanned a dozen Choctaws.

The Trojans added their final run of the evening in the bottom of the eighth. Boughton drew a one-out walk, Moore singled, and Drew Bradley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. One out later, Rogers picked up a single to third base that scored pinch runner Wyatt Bowling to provide the final margin of 5-0.
