TREVECCA BASEBALL | Trojans Draw 14 Walks; Win 5th Straight with 14-5 Defeat of Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – Free passes are always good for an offense and bad for a pitching staff in Baseball. On Friday night, the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team proved that adage true once again, as the Trojans drew 14 walks and two hit batsmen.

Trevecca (18-6, 11-2 GSC) won their fifth straight game, as the Trojans rapped out 11 hits on their way to a 14-5 win over the Union University (10-13, 4-9 GSC) Bulldogs.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES      
The meeting was the 61st between the Trojans and Bulldogs since the 2000 season, and the Trojans are now 34-26-1 in that span. Trevecca has now won three straight overall, and they have a nine-game winning streak at Fesmire Field in Jackson.

HOW IT HAPPENED     
Union threatened to break the ice in the bottom of the first, but Jonah Smithson pitched his way out of a bases loaded two out jam without allowing a run, and in the top of the second, Trevecca drew first blood.

Cade Moore dribbled a one-out single to third base, and he then began advancing without help from other Trojan hitters. Moore moved to second on a wild pitch, then he advanced to third on another wild pitch. He eventually trotted home on a passed ball to put Trevecca on top 1-0.

In the top of the third, Caleb Webster left the yard with a towering home run over the scoreboard in left field at Union's Fesmire Field that doubled the Trojans' lead to 2-0. Trevecca threatened for more in the inning, but the Bulldogs were able to wiggle out of trouble, and in their half of the fourth, the Bulldogs used soft contact to take the lead.

Union took advantage of a Trevecca error, a hit batsman, and four singles to plate five runs and take a 5-2 lead. Trevecca answered immediately with help from the Bulldogs, as the Trojans worked four walks in the top of the fifth, and Drew Bradlew came through with a bases loaded, two-RBI single into center field that tied the game up at 5-5.

That inning helped swing the momentum back in Trevecca's favor. In the sixth frame, the Trojans' first two hitters were retired, but then Trevecca put together a lengthy rally. Six straight Trojan hitters reached base with two out - four of them on walks - and the two Trojan hits in that span were a two-RBI triple from Moore and a two-RBI double off the bat of Landon Rogers that put Trevecca ahead 9-5.

Jonah Smithson pitched his way through the fifth, and aside from the difficulties in the fourth, he had a solid outing again. He scattered six hits in the game, and he fanned eight. Grant Donkin relieved Smithson in the sixth, and after working a quick sixth frame, he pitched around a walk and two singles in the seventh to escape the frame unscathed.

Trevecca put the game away in the eighth. Three straight walks to Trevecca batters loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, and Drew Bradley lined a two-RBI double that one-hopped the left field wall and pushed the Trojans' lead to 11-5. Landon Rogers was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases for Elijah Cross. Cross flared a soft single over the drawn-in infield that plated two more runs and put runners at the corners - still with no one out. The two runs that scored on the play, along with a sac fly later in the inning from Rylan Moses, provided the final margin of 14-5
