HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team has shown some serious grit in the early season. Wednesday afternoon was one of their grittiest performances yet, but the Trojans were unable to make the comeback stick on the road in East Tennessee.
Trevecca (9-5) rallied from a deficit of 6-2 midway through the game to tie the score in the ninth, but the Lincoln Memorial University (9-7) Railsplitters were able to push across one final run in the last of the ninth to take the win over Trevecca, 7-6.
SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The Trojans and Railsplitters have met 14 times since the 2001 season, with LMU holding an 11-3 edge in the series during that span.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca rapped out three hits in the first inning - all singles - and with runners at second and third and two outs,
Cade Martin broke the season with a two-RBI base knock to left that scored
Cade Moore and
Noah Boughton to put the Trojans up 2-0.
The lead was short-lived, however, as LMU immediately answered. The Railsplitters sent 10 men to the plate in their half of the first, and the four hits and three walks they recorded led to five runs, and suddenly LUM led 5-2. A solo home run in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Railsplitters lead to 6-2, but over the final four innings, Trevecca clawed their way back into the game.
Luke Dymond belted his first home run of the campaign in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-3, and in the ninth, Trevecca tied the game.
Rylan Moses led off with a single, and
Caleb Webster continued his torrid start to the season as he followed with his sixth double of the season to put runners at second and third with no one out.
Elijah Cross bounced out to third for the first out, but Moses scored on the play to trim the margin to 6-4. After Moore walked, and Martin singled to drive in Webster, a pair of wild pitches were uncorked that allowed Moore to scamper home with the tying run, and suddenly, the score was level at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, though, LMU got runners to first and second with two out when the Railsplitters walked it off with an RBI base hit to right field from Aaron Hobson that gave them the 7-6 win.
