Trevecca Baseball | Extras Kind to TNU as Trojans Take Series Finale at GSW

AMERICUS, Ga.  The sun came out again on Sunday as the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team wrapped up their season opening road series at Georgia Southwestern State University. Trevecca looked good for much of the afternoon, and it took longer than the Trojans wanted, but Trevecca salvaged the series finale in extra innings.

Trevecca (1-2) held a 7-3 lead with just three outs to get, and despite a pair of ninth-inning homers from Georgia Southwestern (2-1), the Trojans took the win in 10 innings, 8-7. The win is the fourth straight for the Trojans when more than nine innings are necessary, and it moves Chase Sain to within one victory of Bill Green for fourth on the Trojans' all-time coaching wins list.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The series this weekend marks the first time in program history for the Trojans that they have battled the 'Canes. As the Trojans head home from the weekend, Georgia Southwestern leads the all-time series 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the first time on the weekend, Trevecca scored first. Jacob Lester drew a one-out walk in the top of the first frame, and he came around to score on a pair of errors from the Hurricanes to give Trevecca the 1-0 lead. GSW answered with a run-scoring two-out single in the bottom half of the frame, and the Hurricanes took the lead in the second on another two-out knock to take the 2-1 lead.

Caleb Webster pulled a high chopper inside the bag at third for a single to lead off the top of the third, and while Drew Reaves flagged the ball down on the dive to keep it on the infield, he threw wildly to first and Webster wound up on second with nobody out. Lester flew out to advance Webster to third, and with two away, Noah Boughton singled to drive in Webster and knot the score at two.

Judson Ceyanes and Miles Nelson notched back-to-back singles to start the fourth, and Tyler Jenkins lofted a sacrifice fly to score Ceyanes with one away and push Trevecca back in front 3-2. GSW tied things up at 3-3 in the fifth thanks to three wild pitches, but KC Anchors doubled and scored in the sixth to give Trevecca the lead back.

Trevecca surged in the seventh. Boughten and pinch hitter Grant Morgan were retired quickly, but a walk to Ceyanes started the merry-go-round. Beginning with Ceyanes, six straight Trojans reached base - three on singles, two on walks, and Webster with a strange-hop double to shortstop - and the Trojans tallied three runs and sent nine men to the plate as they stretched their lead to 7-3.

As the game headed to the ninth, the Trojans turned the ball over to Kayne Jinks to protect the lead. Jinks faced Devon Murphy, who led off the inning with a home run to cut the Trevecca lead to 7-4. After a pop out, a walk, and a strikeout, Jinks appeared to get out of the jam, but a pop-up from Drew Reaves fell perfectly in between two Trojan defenders to drive in a run, and it brought the tying run to the plate. GSW immediately tied the game with a second home run in the inning, but Tristan Seputis entered for Trevecca and induced an inning-ending groundout to send the game to the 10th.

In the 10th inning, the first two Trojans were retired without incident, but Morgan and Ceyanes notched back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with two away. With Nelson at the plate, though, the Trojans got one final break, as a passed ball got far enough away from catcher Edwin Melendez, and Morgan raced home, diving in with the go-ahead run to put Trevecca up 8-7.

For the bottom of the 10th, the Trojans turned to freshman Corbin Crosby who needed just eight pitches in his second appearance of the weekend to secure his first collegiate save.
