Trevecca Baseball | Comeback Bid Falls Short in 7-6 Loss to KWC

NASHVILLE  Friday afternoon was a beautifully sunny one at Jackson Field as the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team opened the home portion of their schedule. The Trojans welcomed former conference foe Kentucky Wesleyan College to the Music City, but it was the Panthers who spoiled the Opening Day party.

Kentucky Wesleyan (1-0) tallied four runs in the top of the ninth inning, and while the Trojans (1-3) got the tying run to the plate on three separate occasions in the bottom half, Trevecca was unable to find the tying tally, and the Panthers hung on for the win, 7-6.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The Trojans and Panthers shared spots in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference from 2014-2023, and the Trojans hold the all-time series lead 25-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kentucky Wesleyan dented the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when a Liam Hutson groundout scored Tucker Hagan to put KWC on top 1-0. The Panthers doubled their lead on an RBI two-bagger from Michael with two down in the fourth, but in the fifth, Trevecca rallied.

Luke Dymond was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and he moved up to second on a bunt single from Rylan Moses as the next batter. Caleb Webster sacrificed Dymond and Moses into scoring position, and Cade Moore followed with a two-run double to right center that tied the game at 2-2. Moore then stole third, and he came home on an RBI single from Noah Boughton to put the Trojans on top 3-2, but KWC answered quickly.

Rhett Dysholm led off the top of the sixth with a home run to right field, and that proved to be all the offense in the game until the ninth frame.

Kentucky Wesleyan tallied four runs - the last of those coming on an error with two outs in the top of the inning, and the Panthers headed to the bottom of the ninth up four. The Trojans, though, did not go down quietly. Dymond opened the frame with an infield single, and Moses followed with a walk to immediately bring the tying run into the on-deck circle. Webster singled in Dymond, and Moore followed with an infield single that loaded the bases with nobody out.

Jacob Lester lifted a sacrifice fly to left to pull the Trojans within two at 7-5, and Boughton drove in his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly that settled on the warning track in right field, and suddenly the Trojans' deficit was just a single run at 7-6. Miles Nelson strode to the plate, and on the first pitch he saw, he unloaded on a ball deep to left field, but it curled foul. Nelson battled the count to 2-2, but he bounced a grounder up the middle that was flagged down for an out, and the Trojans fell 7-6.
