Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Sweep KWC; Coach Sain Passes Program Founder Coach Green on Wins List

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team entered their double-header against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday knowing they had the opportunity to witness history. Thanks to a 28-run offensive explosion, they were able to do just that.

Trevecca (3-3) pounded out 27 hits in only 14 offensive innings on Saturday, as the Trojans swept the Panthers (1-2) in the twin bill to push head coach Chase Sain into fourth on the Trojans all-time head coaching wins list. Trevecca won game one 9-6, and in the rubber game of the series, the Trojans took a 19-0 win in seven innings.

Sain passes program founder Bill Green, who won 162 games from the program's inaugural season in 1971 through 1979. Green won three conference titles (1976, '78, '79) and he led the Trojans to the NAIA District 24 tournament in each of those seasons as well. He was inducted into the Trevecca Hall of Fame in 2007, and he is one of four baseball coaches in the Trevecca Hall of Fame - along with Elliot Johnson, Jeff Forehand, and Chris Collins. Sain is now 48 wins behind Forehand, who helmed the program from 2001-06.

The wins give Trevecca its 1,499th win in Trojan Program history.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The Trojans and Panthers shared spots in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference from 2014-2023, and the Trojans hold the all-time series lead 27-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

Trevecca jumped out early in game one. Caleb Webster and Cade Moore drew back-to-back walks to open the game, then Trevecca started executing on the bases. Both Webster and Moore stole a base in the inning, and each ended up scoring. Trevecca got a sacrifice fly from Miles Nelson in the inning, and Noah Boughton and Drew Bradley each picked up RBI hits, as the Trojans took the early 3-0 lead.

Rylan Moses and Jacob Lester each stole bases in the second inning, and Moses scored a run to make it 4-0 Trevecca. Moses scored again in the fourth on an RBI double from Webster to push the lead to 5-0. In the sixth frame, Moore doubled and drove in Tyler Jenkins, and heading to the seventh, the Trojans led 6-0.

Kentucky Wesleyan came to life in the top of the seventh frame, though they got some help from the Trojans. Trevecca walked three Panther hitters, and an error led to two unearned runs, and the Panthers scored five in the inning to cut the Trojans' lead to 6-5.

Webster and Moore combined to drive in three runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, as the Trojans' lead swelled to 9-5, and while KWC scored a run in the ninth, Trevecca closed it out with a 9-6 win.

In the game, Trevecca stole eight bases - the most for the Trojans in a single game since they stole nine bags in a 15-7 win over Davis & Elkins (W. Va.) at home on April 1, 2016.

GAME 2
Both teams got runners into scoring position in the first, and each time, they were stranded, but in the second inning, Trevecca opened the scoring. Trevecca loaded the bases with one out when Rylan Moses singled back through the box to drive in Noah Boughton and Tyler Jenkins to put the Trojans up 2-0. Cade Moore knocked in Ethan Madison two batters later, and Jacob Lester scored Moses on a fielder's choice to cap the 4-run rally in the frame, and Trevecca took a 4-0 lead to the third.

Jenkins picked up an RBI single, and Moses lifted a sacrifice fly in the third to push the Trojans' advantage to 6-0, and Jenkins added a two-run double in the fourth as a part of a 3-run frame that stretched the Trevecca lead to 9-0.

In the fifth, though, the Trojans opened the flood gates. Trevecca scored 10 runs on only six hits in the frame, as the Trojans benefited from three hit batsmen and four walks in the inning. Miles Nelson drove in the first two runs of the inning with a single up the middle, Jenkins walked to drive in a run, and Madison and Moses followed with consecutive two-run doubles. Alex Fernandez singles home Moses, and he moved up to second on a throwing error. From there, Lester singled him in, and Lester later scored on a bases loaded walk to Cade Martin as the Trojans suddenly led 19-0.

In their final two times at bat, Kentucky Wesleyan managed only one hit - a lead off single in the seventh, as Trevecca cruised home with the 19-0 win.
