CREVE COUER, Mo. – The Trevecca Nazarene University STUNT team reached the College STUNT NCAA Division II Nationals in its very first season. The team ended their season with coach Kelly Quigley leading the program to an 18-9 record.
At nationals, the Trojans, the No. 7 seed, lost to No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist University (11-1), 24-1, before seeing their season end in overtime in an elimination game with No. 6 Ashland University, 16-14.
In the season one finale, the Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring the first point of the game. At the half, the Trojans held a 5-4 lead.
The Trojans and Eagles split their regular season games, but Ashland won the conference championship game. Ashland won the first meeting of the year 12-11 in a game played at Tiffin. At Trojans Fieldhouse, the Trojans rallied to beat Ashland 14-12. In the conference finals, Ashland, who split the regular season title with Trevecca, took what appeared to be the final meeting of the year, 13-9. But, the Trojans impressed enough in the loss and subsequent wins at the Drury University Tourney to get the No. 7 seed at nationals.
In the third quarter, the Eagles tied things up at 5-5 and then with the game tied 6-6, Ashland took the lead at 7-6 and led 8-7 going to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Trojans closed the gap at 11-10 the on the last routine, tied the game at 13-13, sending the game to overtime.
In the sudden death overtime, Ashland outscored Trevecca 3-1 for a 16-14 win.
The Trojans have just one senior on the squad and look to return even stronger in year two.
