EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans competed at the 2023 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course. The event is hosted by the University of Southern Indiana and the Evansville Regional Sports Commission. Despite fielding a less than a full roster, both the men and teams returned to Nashville after recording some worthy performances.
The women competed at the 6000m distance while the men were tested over the 10,000m course.
Trevecca head coach Austin Selby said, "The weather was absolutely perfect for racing and the course is flat and fast, good times were definitely on the menu."
Selby added, "It was an incredible day all around. All we wanted was for everyone to show up and step up to fill some gaps and they did that plus some."
The men competed without two of their top five performers and one of the five who did make up the team today,
Joel White, had already moved to postseason training mode. Coach Austin Selby was grateful to White for being willing to step up for the good of the team.
Selby said of the men's performance, "we are proud of the men for stepping up today. No sulking, even though we were down some of our top folks. Everyone stepped up, especially Joel who showed what being a true teammate is, saying yes to my ask to run today."
Selby added his thoughts on the women's strong times, "Our women's performance showed how deep the Midwest is. When your team is almost a minute better than their previous PRs in the 6000m, you would finish far higher than 23rd. We ran absolutely lights out, and have a lot to be proud of, but we are in a strong region and it showed."
