Box Score CANTON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (14-6, 7-3 Great Midwest) defeated Malone University (7-12, 4-6 Great Midwest) in four sets (25-22, 25-15, 15-25, 25-19) on Friday evening in Osborne Hall.
THE SERIES
With the win, the Trojans improve to 5-3 through eight all-time matches against the Pioneers.
THE FLOW
Despite falling into an early 7-3 hole, the Trojans took the opening set in part to a 4-0 run which tied the set at 7-7. From there, Trevecca never trailed, with the set being tied seven other times. Emma Titus and then Maddie Wilds collected consecutive kills to win the opener, 25-22.
Malone captured the opening point of the second set, but the Trojans quickly grabbed control. With the set tied at 5-5, a 4-0 Trojan run more or less put the set out of reach. Trevecca opened up as much as an eight-point advantage at 20-12 before claiming the set, 25-15 off an Emma Titus kill.
Down two sets, the Pioneers were determined to not go quietly. Malone opened a 4-1 advantage early in the third and held at least a one-point advantage after the set was tied at 10-10. Leading 15-13, a 5-0 run opened the set in the hosts' favor. Malone took the third, 25-15.
The fourth set saw the teams play to a 5-5 tie before the Pioneers pushed ahead. Four consecutive points gave Malone a 9-5 lead and forced a Trevecca timeout. The break helped, as the Trojans climbed back into the set to tie it at 11-11. Trevecca collected its first lead of the fourth with an Emilee McDonald kill at 14-13, a lead the Trojans would not surrender the rest of the way. Leading 16-15, the Trojans put the set out of reach with a 6-0 run sparked by a pair of service aces. The Trojans won the fourth, 25-19.
THE NOTES
A pair of Trojans produced double-doubles as Ellie Buffler had a match-high 21 kills with 11 digs. Buffler's 21 kills is her 13th match this season with 10 or more kills and her first 20+ kill match this season. Buffler has now produced four 20+ kill matches throughout her career. Maddie Wilds also collected a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs. With 46 assists and nine digs, Emilee McDonald just missed a double-double. The Trojans hit .247 for the match with seven service aces.
