NASHVILLE – The first trip through the round-robin of the Gulf South Conference schedule was pretty kind to the Trojans. Trevecca was able to defeat some difficult opponents, including taking a win from Saturday's opponent on the road. The second half of the schedule, though, has proven more difficult.
Trevecca (13-13, 10-6 GSC) dropped their second match in a row, this time to the Lee University Flames (14-10, 9-7 GSC). The Flames took the 3-0 win, though the Trojans are still a game ahead of the Flames in the GSC standings.
With two matches left in the season, the Trojans are in a tie with Valdosta State for fourth in the Gulf South, though they are just a half-game behind the University of Montevallo. The UAH Chargers have locked up the regular season title, and while the eight participants have been determined, only one other seed is determined - Christian Brothers University in eighth.
SERIES HISTORY
Lee now holds a 24-6 record in the series since rally scoring was introduced in 2000. Trevecca has won three of the last five meetings in the series, though.
MATCH RECAP
Lee eased their way out to a 5-3 lead early in the match, but two quick Trevecca points that included an ace from
Isabella Sherrod knotted things at five. A 5-2 Lee run, followed by a 5-1 Trojans' run gave Trevecca a 12-11 lead, with the surge punctuated by a pair of kills from
Emma Schnitzer. Lee, though, scored seven of the next nine points to take an 18-14 lead, and while the Trojans kept things close, the Flames led the rest of the way as they took the set 25-21.
Jordan Hunt notched a kill on the first point in set two, and the Trojans led several times early. Kills from
Kayla Bullard and
Katilyn Grant helped the Trojans take a 6-4 lead, but the Trojans were unable to shake free of the Flames. A 4-1 Lee run helped them take their first lead of the set at 10-9, and the stretch continued with four more points in a row moments later to give Lee the 14-10 edge. Again, Trevecca kept things close, but they were unable to draw even down the stretch, and Lee took the frame 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third stanza, Trevecca surged early. Sherrod notched another ace, and Grant added another two kills in the first five points of the frame, as the Trojans took an early 4-1 lead. Lee came back with five of the next six points, however, to take their first lead of the set, and the teams battled fiercely to gain the upper hand. Trevecca again took a 12-11 lead, but again, the Flames answered with four points in a row to take the lead 15-12. A pair of aces late in the set from
Zoie Elrod pulled the Trojans within one at 21-20, but Lee scored the final four points of the day to take the set 25-20 and complete the sweep.
