Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Finish Strong Against MCU, Keep Top-Four Seed in Reach

NASHVILLE - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak Friday, pulling away over the final two sets to beat Mississippi Christian University 3-1 at Trojan Fieldhouse.
 
The Trojans (14-13, 11-6 GSC) closed the third set with eight straight points and never trailed in the fourth, completing a season sweep of the Choctaws (11-19, 8-10 GSC). Trevecca hosts West Alabama on Saturday at 1 p.m., with a win guaranteeing a top-four seed in next week's Gulf South Conference tournament.

SERIES HISTORY

Trevecca leads the series 5-2 and has won four straight meetings with Mississippi Christian. The Trojans also won 3-1 in Clinton, Miss., on Oct. 10 and are 3-0 at home in the series.

MATCH RECAP

Trevecca raced to a 12-1 lead in the first set as Lily Vanbebber served eight straight points, including two aces. Mississippi Christian recovered to take a 20-18 lead, but a Megan Ellis kill started a three-point TNU response. Isabella Sherrod delivered four kills in the set, including the final point in a 25-23 win.
 
The Choctaws answered in the second, turning a 14-13 deficit into a 20-14 lead with seven straight points. Meg Paparella served two aces during the run, and MCU hit .303 in a 25-18 victory that evened the match.
 
Trevecca opened the third set with a 5-1 lead and held the advantage the rest of the way. Katilyn Grant put down six kills in the frame, and the Trojans turned a 17-13 margin into a 25-13 win with their closing run. Charlee Young served the final seven points.
 
The Trojans took the first three points of the fourth and stayed in front. When MCU drew within 15-13, TNU answered with four straight points. Grant added five kills in the set as Trevecca hit .444 with 14 kills and two errors on 27 attempts to finish the match 25-18.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS

Grant led Trevecca with 15 kills on .387 hitting and added two solo blocks. Sherrod finished with nine kills, while Ellis, Jordan Hunt and Kayla Bullard added five each.
Brynne Krangnes recorded 37 assists and a career-high 20 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.

Vanbebber led TNU with 22 digs, and Bullard added 18 as the Trojans finished with a 78-58 advantage in digs.

Zoie Elrod served three of Trevecca's 10 aces. Hunt led the Trojans with four blocks.
Cydney Mitchell led MCU with 10 kills. Paparella and Audrianna Green had nine apiece, and Samarin Kipple collected 20 digs.

UP NEXT

Trevecca closes the regular season Saturday, Nov. 7, against the University of West Alabama at Trojan Fieldhouse. First serve is at 1 p.m. Central. The Tigers (25-6, 12-5 GSC) lost 3-2 at Lee on Friday despite 56 assists and six aces from Rachele Zanini. West Alabama won the first meeting with TNU 3-0 on Oct. 9 in Livingston.
 
A Trevecca win produces a 12-6 conference finish and a seed no lower than fourth. The Trojans enter Saturday tied with Montevallo at 11-6; their final seed and quarterfinal opponent depend on the last day's results.
 
The eight-team GSC Championship runs Nov. 12-14 at UAH's Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Ala. Quarterfinals begin Thursday, followed by Friday's semifinals and Saturday's noon championship. The winner earns the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.
