Trevecca Volleyball | Trevecca's Great Midwest Volleyball Season Concludes with Loss at Walsh

NORTH CANTON -  The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (5-7, 5-7 Great Midwest) saw it's 2020-2021 conference season come to an end on Tuesday, with a 3-1 (15-25, 26-24, 20-25, 16-25) Great Midwest tournament loss at the Walsh Cavaliers (11-1, 11-1 Great Midwest)

The loss wraps up a shortened Great Midwest season in which the Trojans went several matches without multiple key players due to return-to-play protocols. Despite finishing the Great Midwest slate, the Trojans still have two non-conference games to be played this season.

THE SERIES

It was the seventh all-time meeting between Walsh and Trevecca, and the Trojans now trail 1-6 all-time. This was the second matchup of the season, as Walsh took a 3-0 win over Trevecca on February 22.

THE MATCH

The Trojans kept it close early in the opening set, but Walsh pulled away to take a 1-0 lead with 25-16 win. Late in the second set, it appeared as though Trevecca was in danger of surrendering a 2-0 deficit, facing a 24-21 disadvantage with Walsh setting up a set-point serve. After three consecutive errors by the Cavaliers, Trevecca's Ellie Buffler helped the Trojans to five straight points with a service ace and a kill for Trevecca to rally and take a 26-24 set win to make it an even 1-1 match.

Late in the third set, Trevecca's Emma Green and Chloee McDaniel both collected kills and Austyn Baldwin rejected an attack to pull the Trojans within five, trailing 24-19. Walsh capitalized on a service error by Trevecca, however, and took the 25-20 win to lead 2-1.

The Cavaliers controlled the third and final set to win 25-16, and end Trevecca's season with a 3-1 match win. 

TOP PLAYERS

Ellie Buffler continued her momentum, leading the Trojans with 19 kills and a percentage of .341 with four digs and 21 points. Austyn Baldwin collected a dozen kills on a .321 percentage with five digs and 14 points. Madison Martin picked up eight kills in her return from injury, and Emma Green had seven kills with a .294 percentage.

Three Trojans hit double figures in digs, with Chloee McDaniel leading with 12, to go with 38 assists. Lydia Yonce and Katie Crutchfield had 10 digs apiece. 

For Walsh, Hallie Schroeder had 21 kills on a .486 percentage with 14 digs, and Alexis Gilland had 14 kills and a .480 percentage. Olivia Kearns led the Cavaliers in assists with 36 and 10 digs.

THE TEAM

Walsh out-killed Trevecca 57-53, and hit at a .296 rate as a team while the Trojans hit at a .201 clip. The Trojans had 45 assists to Walsh's 43, but surrendered 57 digs while picking up 52.

Walsh blocked six Trojan attacks, while Trevecca could only muster two blocks. Trevecca also gave up 18 attack errors, and Walsh had nine.

WHAT'S NEXT 

Trevecca's Great Midwest campaign is over, but the Trojans will pick up non-conference play on April 9 at Alabama Huntsville.

Trevecca will stay on the road to play at Sewanee on April 16.
