THE SERIES
The Trojans and Tritons had not met since the 2016-17 campaign in which the University of Missouri-St. Louis was victorious, 42-31. UMSL leads 3-1 all-time, having won three straight since the Trojans opened the series with a 71-67 win back in 2013-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After winning the tip, the Trojans opened action by feeding Emma Palmer down low for the early basket. Grace Baird's 3-pointer gave the Trojans their largest lead of the game (12-8) with 2:50 to play, but the Tritons answered with a pair of treys to lead 14-12 after the first and would not trail the rest of the way.
USML opened the second quarter with another 3-pointer, the third of their nine in the contest. For much of the second quarter, the squads traded 3-point looks. With 3:57 left in the half, the Tritons separated with a 6-0 run to capture their largest lead of the game 30-20. The Trojans pulled to within seven (34-27) at the break behind Keeley Carter's seven points to end the half.
Carter picked up right where she left off scoring the first bucket of the third quarter, the only frame in which the Trojans outscored the Tritons. Although Katie Tate's 3-pointer pulled the Trojans within four (46-42) the Tritons pushed their advantage back to six to close the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was not as friendly to the Trojans who shot 3-of-11 from the floor. Despite making all five of their foul shots, the Trojans could not overcome the six-point deficit.
PLAYER PERFORMANCE
Keeley Carter had a game-high 15 points with four assists and two rebounds. Carter shot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Bayleigh Carmichel sank two treys, finishing with nine points and four rebounds while Alexa Smiddy stuffed the box score with eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
TEAM STATS
The Trojans shot a respectable 42% (18-43) from the field and were nearly perfect from the charity stripe (10-11). Both squads sank nine 3-pointers and had 12 assists, but a big difference came on the glass, as the Tritons doubled up the Trojans 36-18.
UP NEXT
The Trojans march into December ready to begin Great Midwest Athletic Conference play when they welcome the University of Findlay (1-3) inside Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m.
