TREVECCA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL | Trojans Extinguish Flames in GSC Quarterfinal; Face UAH in Semis Thursday

NASHVILLE – Monday marked twenty-two years to the day since the last time the Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team last faced Lee University in the postseason. On that evening, it was Trevecca that took an overtime win over the Flames in the Trojan Fieldhouse led by an outstanding effort from their star senior in the post. On Monday night, all of that history repeated except the overtime portion.

Trevecca (18-10) was led by a 19-point effort from Cheyenne Trotter - much like Lindsey Fly did for the Trojans in 2004 - and the Trojans took out Lee (18-10) with a 63-53 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca sprinted out to an early 10-3 lead as they held Lee without a field goal for more than seven minutes. While the Flames were being held down, the Trojans were spreading the offense around. Five different Trevecca players scored in the quarter, and in the final minute of the frame, Trotter scored twice as Trevecca took a 14-7 lead into the second.

As the second quarter started, Trevecca kicked the pace into high gear. Tatum Shaw scored on back-to-back possessions to start an 11-0 Trevecca run that pushed the Trojans' lead all the way to 18 points at 25-7 with 6:13 to play in the half. Lee trimmed the margin to nine with a quick 7-0 spurt, but Trevecca got consecutive buckets from Brianna Burgess and Shaw. Again, Lee answered with another 7-0 run to but the Trevecca halftime lead to 30-21.

The teams traded buckets early in the third period, but then Lee went on their best run of the game. The Flames scored 12 straight points and held the Trojans without a point for more than five minutes. With 3:08 to play in the game, Burgess scored to tie the game, and the Trojans scored seven of the final nine points of the frame to take a 41-39 to the final 10 minutes.

Lee battled back to tie the score at 43 just more than two minutes into the final frame, and the game remained close for the next several minutes. With 3:01 to play, though, Trotter went to work again. She scored back-to-back buckets to put Trevecca up 53-49, and after that Jordan Gillies and Shaw combined to push the advantage to 56-49 with 1:15 to go. Lee got a pair of free throws with 1:10 left on the clock, but the Trojans salted the game away with seven straight free throw makes that pushed the margin to 63-51. While Lee did manage to score a layup with five seconds to play, Trevecca took the win 63-53.

THE TEAM
Each team took 60 shots in the game, and Trevecca made 21 of their attempts for a game shooting performance of 35%. The Trojans were just 3-for-17 (17.6%) from long range, but Trevecca sealed the game at the foul line where they were 18 of 22 (81.8%). Lee won the rebounding battle 42-39, but the Trojans only turned the ball over eight times compared to 15 for the Flames. Trevecca turned those 15 Lee giveaways into 20 points, and they out-scored the Flames in the paint 34-32.

THE PLAYERS
Trotter notched another double-double - her 15th of the season - with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Trojans in both categories. Shaw and Gillies each added a dozen tallies, and Gillies paced Trevecca with four assists and three steals.

UP NEXT
Trevecca will face another tough test in the Gulf South Conference Championship semifinal on Thursday night. The Trojans will try for the third time this season to take a win from the GSC's top-seed, the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (27-3). The Chargers, Trojans, Union University Bulldogs, and Delta State Statesmen all won as higher seeds in the GSC Championship on Monday. Trevecca and UAH will battle for a spot in the GSC Championship Final on Thursday night in Huntsville at 6 p.m.
