THE SERIES
After sweeping the regular-season matchup and eliminating Trevecca from the Great Midwest spring tournament last season, Walsh fell for the second time tonight. The Cavaliers own a 6-2 all-time series advantage. Trevecca won the first meeting in 2016, only to see the Cavaliers win the next six.
MATCH DETAILS
The match opened with back-to-back kills from either side as the teams played to 10 ties and five lead changes which proved to provide an entertaining opener. Neither team scored more than two consecutive points in the first as, per usual, the set was decided late. A crucial timeout flipped the script. Trailing 22-20, the Trojans requested a rest and responded with a 5-1 run to close out the set.
SET TWO
Although the set opened with a flurry of ties and lead changes, the Cavaliers used a 4-0 run to create separation at 9-5. The Trojans would come within two, but the rest belonged to Walsh, who won 25-19.
SET THREE
After dropping the two points of the set, the Trojans pieced together three kills and would not trail again in the third. The set was tied on four occasions early, but after a Chloee McDaniel kill to break a 5-5 tie, it was all Trojans. Between Walsh timeouts, at 17-12 and 20-13 the adjustments were made. A 5-0 Cavalier run, forced a Trevecca timeout at 20-18. Two kills by Emma Titus, one from Ellie Buffler, and a pair of attack errors ended things, 25-20.
SET FOUR
Down two sets to one, Walsh shot out of the gate in set four. Winning the first seven points, the Cavaliers slowly saw their lead evaporate. Trailing by eight, a 5-0 run for the Trojans pulled them with three at 11-8. The set was tied at 16-16 and the Trojans even pushed ahead by three on a pair of kills and a service error. In the end, the Cavaliers saw out the set 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set
SET FIVE
A service error started things off on the wrong foot for the Trojans, who tried to thwart early Walsh leads of 4-1 and 8-4 by calling a timeout. It worked once, but not after the second offering, as the Cavaliers opened a 10-5 lead and had seemingly control of the set. A service error and Ellie Buffler pulled the Trojans within three at 10-7. However, the Trojans fought back and would not surrender another point after surrendering another untimely service error at 12-9. Trevecca closed the match on a 6-0 run, helped by two Madison Martin kills and three Walsh attack errors.
TOP PLAYERS
Chloee McDaniel led the offensive attack with 10 kills (.381) with 17 digs and a pair of blocks. Ellie Buffler tallied a team-high 16 kills and finished the night with 20 digs for the double-double.
