Trevecca Baseball | Trojans 8-0 in G-MAC Play, Host Union Bulldogs Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (17-12, 8-0 G-MAC) defeated Davis & Elkins College (6-20, 0-4 G-MAC) 10-6 and 10-4 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Saturday double-header at Jackson Field.

 

The Trojans have won nine in a row overall and are now 12-0 all-time versus Davis & Elkins.

 

Trevecca will host Union University (15-15) on Tuesday and end the 10-game home stand hosting Salem International University (4-26, 0-6 G-MAC) next weekend on April 7-8. The Trojans are 25-20-1 versus Union since 2001. The series with SIU was originally schedule for Salem, W.Va., but will be played at Trevecca instead. Trevecca is 9-0 versus Salem all-time.

 

GAME ONE: RECAP

Trevecca fell behind for third consecutive game versus Davis & Elkins. The Senators scored two in the first. Trevecca evened the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the second. The Trojans broke the game open with five in the third for a 7-2 lead. The Senators scored one in the fifth, but in their half the Trojans extended their lead with three in their half of the fifth for a 10-2 lead. The visitors plated three in the seventh for the 10-6 final.

 

In the game-deciding bottom of the third Tyler Tichenor (SR/Centertown, KY) walked as the lead-off hitter. Micah Blount (SR/Birmingham, AL) sent one out of the park for a two-run home run. An out later Zach Tompkins (SR/Mt. Juliet, TN) doubled and Tyler Burns (SO/Tullahoma, TN) reached on a walk. Clay Taton doubled to score Tompkins. Ryan Arington (JR/Cincinnati, OH) doubled next scoring Staton and Burns.

 

In the three-run Trojan fifth, Clay Staton (JR/Franklin, TN) started it off with a single. An hout later Carter Wiseman (SO/Hendersonville, TN) reached on a hit-by-pitch. With two out Tyler Tichenor drove one over the right field fence for a three-run home run.

 

Tyler Tichenor was 2-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, a home run, and a walk. Zach Tompkins went 3-3 with two runs scored, reached on a hit-by-pitch, and a double. Clay Staton was 3-4 with two runs scored, a RBI, and a double. Ryan Arington was 1-2 with three RBI, a double, and a walk.

 

Ivey Starling (SR/Brentwood, TN) pitched six for the win and it now 4-3 on the year. Starling allowed five hits, three runs – one earned, two walks, and had nine strikeouts.

 

GAME TWO: RECAP

Jon Newman (SO/Gilbert, SC) started and pitched 6.2 inning for the win and a 3-0 overall record this year. Newman allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out four. He allowed four runs – all earned. Jake Roberson (FR/Springfield, TN), Christian Lohr (SO/Verona, KY), and Mason Dunn (SR/Goodlettsville, TN) closed out the game in shutout fashion over the final 2.1 innings.

 

Trevecca held D&E scoreless in the top of the first for the first time in the series, then put two on the board in the bottom half of the inning for a 2-0 lead. Trevecca made it a 4-0 lead with two more in the second. A two-run third for D&E cut the Trojan lead in half. Trevecca scored one in the fourth and after a run for the Senators in the fifth; the Trojans added two more in the fifth for a 7-3 TNU advantage. In the seventh the visitors scored a run, but the home team finished the scoring with three in the eighth and a 10-4 score.

 

Trevecca had 13 hits while Davis & Elkins had eight.

 

Ethan Harrison (FR/Erlanger, KY) led of the Trojan first inning with a walk and stole second. Tyler Tichenor singled to score Harrison. The Tichenor liner glanced off of the head of Senator starter Christian Scott and left the game with Austin Main coming on to pitch. Tichenor advanced to second on a wild pitch, then after Micah Blount walked, stole third, to tie Brad Coon for the career lead in stolen bases. After Bryson Shelton (JR/Powell, TN) lined out to the D&E first baseman, who then stepped on the bag to double up Blount, Clay Staton singled to score Tichenor.

 

In the eighth, Clay Staton doubled with one away. Tyler Burns and Sam Mang (FR/Woodstock, GA) walked to load the bases. Ryan Arington doubled to drive in two more. Carter Wiseman reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases again. Ethan Harrison walked to force in a run, the final run of the game and put the Trojans up 10-4.

 

Ethan Harrison was 3-4 with a run scored, three RBI, a double, a triple, two walks, and two stolen bases. Tyler Tichenor went 2-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Clay Staton went 3-5 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double. Ryan Arington was 2-5 with a run scored, two RBI, and two doubles. Sam Mang was 1-2 with three runs scored, and three walks.
