Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Sweep D&E Senators; Tichenor Gets Hit #300

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (15-12, 6-0 G-MAC) defeated Davis & Elkins College (6-18, 0-2 G-MAC) 15-7 and 3-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference Friday double-header at Jackson Field.

 

Tyler Tichenor (SR/Centertown, KY) collected his 300th career hit and a total of three Trojan pitchers combined to get the Trojans the double-header sweep.

 

The Trojans have won seven in a row overall and are now 10-0 all-time versus Davis & Elkins.

 

The two teams will play two games on Saturday beginning at Noon. The first game is scheduled for seven innings while the second game is scheduled for nine-innings.

 

Trevecca will host Union University (15-13) on Tuesday and end the 10-game home stand hosting Salem International University (4-26, 0-6 G-MAC) next weekend on April 7-8. The Trojans are 25-20-1 versus Union since 2001. The series with SIU was originally schedule for Salem, W.Va., but will be played at Trevecca instead. Trevecca is 9-0 versus Salem all-time.

 

GAME ONE: RECAP

Bryan Smith (JR/Unionville, TN) started and pitched six innings to improve to 3-3 on the year. Smith allowed eight hits and five runs with a walk and five strikeouts. Mac Barnes (SO/Arlington, TN) pitched three innings in relief to earn his second save of the year. Barns allowed two runs and four this with a walk and four strikeouts.  

 

Trevecca scored four in the first and the second innings. Micah Blount (SR/Birmingham, AL) hit a three-run blast in the second inning. The Trojans led 8-1 after two innings. The Trojans added a run in the third and four in the fourth for a 12-1 lead. A D&E run in the fifth and three in the sixth cut the Trojan lead to 12-5. A two-run ninth pulled the Senators to within 15-7, but that is where the D&E rally ended.

 

Trevecca combined to collect 15 hits and 10 walks while racking up 15 runs. Five different Trojans had at least two hits. Nine different Trojans reached base, eight by way of a hit.

 

Bryson Shelton (JR/Powell, TN) was 3-4 with two runs scored, five RBI, a double, a triple, a walk. Tyler Tichenor was 3-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, two walks, and four stolen bases. Micah Blount was 1-3 with three runs scored, a three-run home run, three RBI, three walks, and a stolen base. Carter Wiseman (SO/Hendersonville, TN) was 1-3 with three runs scored, a triple, two walks, and two stolen bases.

 

Trevecca had nine stolen bases.

 

GAME TWO: RECAP

John Bolton (JR/Nolensville, TN) pitched the complete game with 10 strikeouts for the Trojans and improved to 4-1 on the season.

 

After allowing a triple to Senator lead-off hitter Travis Philips, who later scored for a 1-0 D&E lead, Bolton settled in and struck out the side in the fourth. The Senators added one more in the sixth with the help of a Trojan error. Bolton allowed five hits and walked three while sitting down 10 Senators on strikes.

 

The Trojans drew seven walks and mixed in four hits to provide enough offense in support of the solid pitching effort by Bolton. Tyler Tichenor was 1-2 with a walk, a double, a stolen base, and an RBI. Ryan Arington (JR/Cincinnati, OH) was 1-1 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base.  

 

After D&E scored one in the first, the Trojans took the lead for good with two in the third and scored their final run in the fourth. D&E made it interesting with a run in the sixth left the tying and go-ahead runs on base when Bolton struck out Ryan Butts to end the threat.

 

In the Trevecca third Ethan Harrison (FR/Erlanger, KY) led off with a single and Tyler Tichenor drove him in with a double. Tichenor was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice the put Bryson Shelton on at first. Shelton stole second and Zach Tompkins (SR/Mt. Juliet, TN) drive Shelton in with a single down the left field line.

 

With two out in the fourth, Ryan Arington reached on a bunt single and then stole second. Arington moved to third on a wild pitch that was ball four to Carter Wiseman. Arington then scored on a wild pitch that was ball four to Ethan Harrison.

 

The three Trojans pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts in the double header.
