Trevecca Baseball | Drop Two at Southern Indiana Invitational

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - In day two of the Southern Indiana Invitational, the No. 20 Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (6-6) dropped two on Saturday. First, Wayne State (1-3) beat TNU 6-2. The University of Southern Indiana (6-3) took the second game in two days from the Trojans, this time 9-4 at the USI Baseball Field.

 

WAYNE STATE RECAP

After runs in the first and fourth for Wayne State and game-tying runs in the third and fifth for the Trojans, the Warriors took the lead with four runs in the decisive seventh. 

 

Wayne State plated the first run in the bottom of the first and after a scoreless second inning, Bryson Shelton (JR/Powell, TN) brought life for TNU with an RBI single that drove in Micah Blount (SR/Birmingham, AL), who reached on a walk, to tie the game, 1-1.

 

The Warriors regained the lead in the fourth.

 

Trevecca knotted the game in the top of the fifth when Tyler Tichenor (SR/Centertown, KY) doubled and stole third setting the table for Shelton to drive in another run with a single, scoring Tichenor.

 

The game was decided in the seventh when Wayne State scored four runs on five hits to pull ahead 6-2.

 

Tyler Tichenor hit 2-for-4 with a run scored while Bryson Shelton brought both runs home on his 2-for-4 performance. Micah Blount plated one run after walking in the first in his two plate appearances. 

 

Ivey Starling (SR/Brentwood, TN) (2-1) put in 6.1 innings of work with four strikeouts and one walk. He allowed six runs on eleven hits before Christian Lohr (SO/Verona, KY) came in to finish the game with 1.2 innings pitched and had two strikeouts and allowing one hit.

 

SOUTHERN INDIANA RECAP

Southern Indiana jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning before adding three in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.

 

Trevecca made it a 5-3 game with three in the sixth.

 

The Screaming Eagles erased doubt for the outcome with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Trevecca closed the scoring with a run in the ninth for the 9-4 final.

 

Tyler Tichenor had a three-hit game going 3-5 with a stolen base. Ethan Harrison (2-5), Griffin Ganick (2-4), and Ryan Arington (2-4) all had two hit games.

 

The Trojans had 13 hits to produce their four runs and left 10 on base. The Screaming Eagles had just six hits, but benefitted from six walks and four Trojan errors.

 

John Bolton took the loss after starting and going four innings. Bolton (2-1) allowed four hits and four runs with two walks and three strikeouts.
