Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Outscore Senators 41-2 in Double Header

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (18-13, 9-1 G-MAC) defeated Davis & Elkins College (2-16, 0-6 G-MAC) 17-0 and 24-2 at Jackson Field.

Trevecca totaled 45 hits over the two games and outscored the Senators 41-2 over the two games. Game one was a 9-inning affair while the second was a scheduled 7-inning game. There were 11 Trojans with a hit and 10 collected multiple hits.

 

The 24 runs in game two are the most of the season. The 27 hits in game two were the second most. Trevecca had 28 hits in a game last week against Salem International. Trevecca has scored 17 twice this season, but also had a 18-run game versus Salem.

 

Hunter Newman (JR/Chapmansboro, Tenn.) was 8-for-9 on the day with 13 RBI. The junior scored six times with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He was successful on both stolen base attempts. In the fourth inning of game two he hit two home runs. The first was a three-run blast, the second a grand slam. It was a seven RBI inning for Newman

 

Newman is hitting .500 on the year with 16 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, and 51 RBI.

 

Ethan Hurt was 5-for-9 with five runs scored, two dobules, a triple, a home run, two hit-by-itch, and seven RBI. Clayton Nichols (SR/Franklin, Tenn.) was 5-for-10 with three runs scored and two RBI. Bryson Shelton (SO/Powell, Tenn. ) was 4-for-5 with six runs scored, a double, a home run, three RBI, four walks, and was 3-for-3 on stolen bases. Chad Sutton (FR/Independence, Mo.) was 5-for-5 with four doubles, three runs scored, two walks, and four RBI. Nick Kristinus (FR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was 4-for-6 with four runs scored, two doubles, two RBI, and was 2-for-2 on stolen bases. Carter Wiseman (FR/Hendersonville, Tenn.) was 4-for-7 with five runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two RBI, and was hit-by-pitch.

 

Combined in the two games, Trevecca hit .549 for the day with 41 runs, 14 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 17 batters reached on walks or hit-by-pitch. Trevecca batters were 45-of-82 at the plate.

 

The teams will play a pair of games on Saturday beginning at Noon. Game one is scheduled for 7-innings while the second is slated for 9-innings. TNU vs D & E Watch Game One Watch Game Two

 

GAME ONE

Michael Purcell (SR/New Johnsonville, Tenn.) (4-1) equaled a team season high with eight innings pitched on his way to the win. He matched John Bolton (SO/Nolensville, Tenn.) with a team season-high 12 strikeout effort while giving up just four this, three came in the second when Purcell pitched out of a bases loaded situation to preserve the shutout. He walked just one.

 

Hunter Newman was 5-for-5 in game one with five RBI. Ethan Hurt provided the needed damage with a three-run home run in the first. Newman had just scored ahead of his home run on a double steal.

 

Trevecca scored four in the first, tow in the second, five in the fourth and fifth innings, and added one in the seventh. There were 18 Trevecca hits.

 

GAME TWO

John Bolton (2-2) pitched a complete game and gave up just four hits, two runs – both earned, and a walk while striking out seven.

 

In the fourth inning, Trevecca scored 16 runs on 15 hits with 21 batters coming to the plate. There were 14 hits in the inning after the Senators had recorded two outs. There were three home runs, two by Hunter Newman. Bryson Shelton also hit a blast.

 

Trevecca had seven doubles in the game and a total of 11 extra base hits.

 

Trevecca also scored three runs in the third and five in the fifth.
