Baseball | Trevecca Wins 5-2 Over UNA, Host Olivet this Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (7-2) defeated the University of North Alabama (4-10) 5-2 on Tuesday night at Jackson Field. The game was moved from UNA after rains surprised and forced the move to Nashville.

UNA jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and led 1-0 until the Trojans broke through in their half of the fourth inning. Trevecca added a run in the seventh and two insurance runs in the eighth. The Lions threatened in the ninth, but the Trojans limited their rally to just a single ninth-inning run.

When the Trojans scored their two runs in the fourth off reliever Kyle Stephenson 0-1, they would not trail again and tagged Stephenson with the loss. Stephenson allowed two runs on four hits over two innings. Kyle Conkle started for the Lions and held Trevecca to no runs on three hits.

TNU had 10 hits and no errors while the Lions had five hits and an error.

Hunter Newman (2-5), Bryson Shelton (2-3), and Ethan Hurt (2-4) all had multi-hit games. Shelton drew a walks and scored a run. Hurt had an RBI. Tyler Tichenor was 1-for-2 with a run scored, two walks, was hit by a pitch, two stolen bases, and two RBI. Trey Martin produced a double. Nick Howell drove in a run while going 1-for-3 at the plate and added a walk and a stolen base.

Rob Rowland got the start, but last just an inning and was one of seven Trojans who marched to the mound. Trevecca's coaching staff wanted to use the mid-week game to get some work in for several pitchers.

Ryan Shultz (1-0) picked up the win when he came on in the fourth and allowed a hit and struck out one. Rowland gave up a hit, a walk and a run. John Bolton pitched two innings and allowed two hits and struck out two. Austin Sisk pitched the fifth in perfect fashion while striking out one. Michael Donaldson was perfect in the sixth. Mike Purcell pitched the seventh and along allowed two walks and had a strikeout. Mason Dunn earned the save (1) by pitching the final two innings. He allowed a run, a walk, and two walks.

Trevecca will host Olivet Nazarene University (4-2) on Friday and Saturday. Trevecca head coach Ryan Schmalz is an alumnus of Olivet and played for the Tigers. Trevecca will play Olivet at 6 p.m. Friday while the two teams will play a double header on Saturday beginning at Noon.
