Trevecca Pounds Out Two Wins Over Blue Mountain

Box Score NEW ALBANY, Miss. - The Trevecca baseball team (24-15, 12-3 TranSouth) pounded out 12 hits in a 12-1, five-inning victory in the opening game of its doubleheader with Blue Mountain College (12-22, 2-13) Saturday afternoon at Legion Field at New Albany City Park. In game two the Trojans pulled away for an 11-5 win to sweep the three-game weekend series. The sweep moved the Trojans into sole possessions of second place in the TranSouth, just a half game back of first place Martin Methodist.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Toppers scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground out by catcher Dustin Lunn. But the Trojans tied it in the second when Chad Reynolds reached on an error and eventually scored on a ground out by Zach Polzin. The Trojans blew the game open in the third inning. With one out, Edwin Borbon and Jordan Foreman singled and Chase Birdwell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Tidwell promptly cleaned the bases with a three-run double to deep left field to make it 4-1 Trojans. An RBI double by Mitch McClay and an RBI single by Polzin capped the Trojans' scoring for the inning.

A six-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Luke Fennell, put the game away for the Trojans, invoking the run rule for the second straight game. Trevecca scored 12 runs on 12 hits, with no errors and three left on base. The Toppers scored one run on four hits, with one error and three runners left on base.

Tidwell went 2-4 with a double, three RBI, and two runs. Foreman and McClay added two hits apiece, while Fennell and Polzin each drove in a pair of runs. Tidwell, McClay, Borbon, and Chad Reynolds all scored twice.

Craig Stem (8-1) got the win, giving up one run on four hits in five innings of work, with five strikeouts and two walks. Jon Paul Barber (0-2) took the loss for Blue Mountain.

GAME TWO RECAP
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. In the top of the first Trevecca's Jordan Foreman singled and advanced to second on a Chase Birdwell sacrifice bunt. Matt Tidwell delivered an RBI-single, scoring Foreman.

Trevecca scored in a run in their half the second for a 2-1 lead. Luke Fennell reached on a fielder's choice and Jackson Nichols came in to pinch run. A wild pitch advanced Nichols to second and a pitch later Edwin Borbon continued with his hot bat and singled through the hole at short. Nichols moved to third and scored on a Foreman single.

Blue Mountain surged ahead 5-2 with a four-run second, aided in part by a Trojan error. Trevecca cut the Toppers advantage to just one run with a two-run third. Chase Birdwell reached on a wild throw, then Matt Tidwell reached on a fielder's choice, but a wild throw allowed Birdwell to advance to third safely and Tidwell advance to second. Mitch McClay delivered a two-run single scoring Birdwell and Tidwell.

After finally stopping the Toppers in the third, Trevecca added five runs in the fourth for a 9-5 advantage. Edwin Borbon opened the Trojan third with a double and advanced to third on Foreman's ground out. Birdwell singled, scoring Borbon. Birdwell moved up to second on a stolen base. Tidwell followed with a triple, scoring Birdwell. A batter later, McClay singled to scored Tidwell. Polzin walked just before Michael Maxwell tripled to score McClay and Polzin.  

The Trojans solidified the victory with two in the sixth for the 11-5 win. Tidwell doubled and scored on Chad Reynolds single. Reynolds advanced to second on the throw home. Reynolds stole third and scored on a passed ball.

PJ Francescon (4-0) picked up the win going five innings and allowing six hits, five runs, one earned run while striking out five. Blake Payton pitched a nearly perfect two innings. Payton allowed just one walk while striking out three. Channing Walker (0-1) took the loss for the Toppers. Walker, one of three Topper hurlers to work in the game, gave up 13 hits, 11 runs, and two walks while striking out two in five innings of work.

Matt Tidwell and Edwin Borbon each had three hits in the game. Tidwell was 3-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a triple. Borbon was 3-4 with a run scored, a double and a stolen base. Chase Birdwell was 1-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a Walk, and a stolen base. Mitch McClay was 2-4 with three RBI, and a run scored. Chad Reynolds was 1-3 with a stolen base, a run scored, and two RBI.
 
The Trojans return home Monday to host #RV Campbellsville (21-11) at 3 p.m.
