Michael Son pitched six strong innings and
Mitch McClay drove in a pair of runs as the 24th-ranked Trevecca baseball team (34-20, 18-6 TranSouth) wrapped up its regular season Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over #RV Union (34-14, 16-8 TranSouth) at Fesmire Field. With the victory, the Trojans clinch second place in the TranSouth standings heading into next week's conference tournament, marking the seventh time in the past eight seasons that Trevecca has finished first or second in the conference.
The game was scoreless for the first two innings before the Trojans broke the deadlock with a run in the top of the third inning.
Jordan Foreman led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved over to third on a bunt single by
Trae Weiss, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Edwin Borbon.
Trevecca added to its lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits and a Bulldog error.
Matt Dobbins led off the inning with a walk, Foreman followed with a single, and Weiss laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. One out later,
Chad Reynolds was hit by a pitch to load the bases. McClay drove in Dobbins and Foreman with a single to right, and Reynolds scored on a throwing error by Union rightfielder Brett Pawlan.
The teams traded runs in the seventh, and Union added a run in the ninth before
Dylan Kuhn closed the door to give the Trojans the series victory.
Son (5-5) was outstanding, allowing just four hits and a run in six innings of work, with three strikeouts and two walks. Kuhn and
Caleb Longshore combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing one run on a pair of hits. Kevin Kirksey (5-4) took the loss for Union.
Foreman, Weiss, and
Matt Owens each had a pair of hits, with Foreman scoring three of Trevecca's five runs. McClay had two RBI, while Borbon and Reynolds drove in a run apiece.
Next up for the Trojans, a return trip to Union's Fesmire Field for the 2011 TranSouth Championships May 2-5.
