Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 24 Trevecca baseball team (33-20, 17-6 TranSouth) split a doubleheader with #RV Union (34-13, 16-7 TranSouth) Thursday afternoon at Fesmire Field, dropping the opener 7-3 before bouncing back to win the nightcap, 5-1.
GAME ONE RECAPAfter falling behind 2-0 early in the opener, the Trojans bounced back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning.
Edwin Borbon singled to lead off the inning. One out later,
Trae Weiss doubled, advancing Borbon to third.
Matt Tidwell followed with a walk, and then
Chad Reynolds doubled deep to centerfield, scoring Borbon and Weiss with the Trojans' first runs of the day. A groundout by
Mitch McClay scored Tidwell, and Trevecca had the lead.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. The Bulldogs scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, capped off by a two-run home run by Kian Jost, to take a 7-3 lead after three full innings.
Junior righthander Jeremey Stack took care of the rest for Union, holding the Trojans to just one hit over the final four innings to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Weiss went 2-4 with one run, while
Chad Reynolds went 1-2 with a walk, a double, and two RBI. Tidwell and Borbon had the only other hits for Trevecca.
Craig Stem (8-3) took the loss for the Trojans, allowing five runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, with two strikeouts and two walks. Stack (9-2) went the distance to earn the victory for Union.
GAME TWO RECAPThe Trojans wasted no time jumping on Bulldog starter Jared Davis, scoring a run in the first and adding two more in the second. In the first,
Edwin Borbon's sacrifice fly scored
Jordan Foreman, who had led off the inning with a single. One inning later,
Mitch McClay led off with a double and scored one out later on a double by
Matt Owens.
Michael Maxwell followed with the Trojans' third double of the inning to drive in Owens.
Junior righthander
PJ Francescon was outstanding on the mound, keeping the Bulldogs off the board through the first five innings, and the offense added to the lead with two more runs in the top of the sixth. Owens led off the inning with his second double of the game and scored on Maxwell's single. Maxwell advanced to second on the throw, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Matt Dobbins, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Foreman.
The Bulldogs finally cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Bryan Hill, but Francescon retired Kevin Kirksey on a fly ball to centerfield to end the threat. Union went quietly in the seventh, and the Trojans had salvaged the split.
Maxwell went 3-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, Owens went 3-3 with a pair of doubles, one RBI, and two runs, and McClay also went 3-3 with a double, a walk, and a run.
Francescon (6-1) went the distance for the victory, giving up four hits and one run in seven innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Davis (8-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
