Trevecca Track and Field | Selby Era Concludes With Another Strong Day at GSC Championships

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The Austin Selby era of Trevecca Nazarene University track and field came to a close on Friday as the Trojans wrapped up their trip to the 2026 Gulf South Conference Outdoor Championships, and as they bid their coach farewell, the Trojans sent him out with another strong performance.

Trevecca posted scoring finishes in seven events, and for the second day in a row, a program record fell - this time in the men's 400-meter dash. The Trojans finished sixth in the men's team standings with 14 points, and they matched that sixth place finish in women's action where they scored 15 points.

The highlight of the day came in the men's 400-meter dash, where it was Leighton Varden who shined the brightest of the Trojans. The freshman circled the track in a new program record 48.64 seconds - a mark that also set a personal record for Varden and placed him fourth giving the Trevecca men five points in the process.

Dayton Floyd added four points for the Trevecca men with a fifth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (57.01), the men's 4x400-meter relay team crossed the line sixth (3:22.10) to score three points, and Zion Griffin added the final two tallies with a seven place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.78).

For the Trevecca women, Campbell Johnson added to her strong meet with a fifth place finish in the javelin. Johnson ripped off a throw of 37.13 meters - nearly three full meters better than she posted in the same discipline as a part of the heptathlon on Thursday - which added four points to the Trevecca team score. Both Trevecca relay quartets finished in sixth place to score two points each as well.

Trevecca also saw seven personal bests and three season bests fall on Friday. Varden, and Carvarious Bowers (52.48) each posted personal records in the men's 400-meter dash, Blake Lance (1:59.63) set a new personal low time in the 800-meter run, Jack Jaeger (4:10.17) did so in the 1,500-meter run, and Hope Ilias (4:59.65) and Sarah Arnold (5:08.69) each ran the women's 1,500 meters in a new personal record time. Kayliana Martin (800m; 2:31.76), Juan Catalan (400m; 54.72), and the men's 4x400-meter relay team (3:22.10) set new season best times.

The meet marks the end of the Austin Selby era on the Hill. Selby was tabbed to revive the cross country program and to launch the Track and Field program for the Trojans in their first season in NCAA Division II in 2013-14. In his 13 seasons at the helm, Selby helped to develop the Trojans into a multi-disciplined program with more than 60 student-athletes, and his tenure featured the Trojans first ever NCAA Division II Championship participants.

With the end of the GSC Championships, the Trojans' 2025-26 season has come to a close.
