Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Reach 30-win plateau; Secure Sixth Seed in GSC Championship

NASHVILLE It took a little longer than the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team would have liked, but the Trojans have reached the 30-win mark for the fifth time under head coach Chase Sain.

Trevecca (30-19, 19-14 GSC) fell into an early hole in game one of the day against Lee University (34-15, 22-11 GSC), and their rally fell short in an 8-5 defeat. Trevecca, though, bounced back behind a solid pitching performance from Spencer Wilkins to take the series finale 8-4. In the double-header, the Trojans' pitching staff recorded 17 more strikeouts, which moves the 2026 Trojans into second in the NCAA-era of the program on the program single-season strikeouts list, and third all-time. The Trojans need four strikeouts in the GSC Championship to set a new NCAA-era record, and they are 48 strikeouts behind the 2007 squad for the program's all-time single season mark.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Trevecca now holds a record of 17-42 all-time against the Flames, and the Trojans have won four of the last seven games in the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

Lee got a pair of RBI singles in the top of the first of game one to take the early lead, but the Trojans cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Rylan Moses reached base as the lead off man for the Trojans for the second straight game, and after he moved to second base on a passed ball, Cade Martin singled him home to trim the lead to 2-1.

In the second, Lee created separation. Four hits, including a pair of three-run blasts led to six runs for the Flames, and suddenly, Lee held a seven-run lead at 8-1.

Drew Bradley belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the third to trim the Trevecca deficit to 8-3, and an inning later, Isaac Whitaker singled home Landon Rogers to inch closer. The Trojans had an opportunity for more in the inning, as Martin came to the plate with two on and two away, but the Flames were able to induce a fielder's choice ground ball to end the threat and preserve their 8-4 lead.

Martin doubled with two out in the Trevecca seventh, and Noah Boughton followed with an RBI base hit to pull Trevecca within three at 8-5. Bradley followed by drawing a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, and Cade Moore came to the plate as a pinch hitter, but he struck out swinging and the Trojans were unable to get any closer. Trevecca got the tying run to the plate again in the bottom of the ninth, but another strikeout ended the threat, and with it the ball game, and the Flames took the win 8-5.

GAME 2
Lee drew first blood in the series finale, but in the bottom of the second, the Trojans took their first lead of the weekend. Jaxson Christ led off the inning with a double, and Caleb Webster followed with a two-run home run to left that gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Webster was involved in another scoring play in the third when he laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the throw to first went awry and allowed Noah Boughton to score. Two outs later, Luke Dymond was hit by a pitch, and Alex Fernandez stepped in and blasted his second grand slam of the year - he also hit one at Union on March 14 - and it was Trevecca's turn to hold an 8-1 lead.

That was plenty for Spencer Wilkins. The senior right-hander - making his final start at Jackson Field - allowed single runs in the fifth and sixth frames, but he finished with a total of six innings and three earned runs allowed. Wilkins scattered seven hits, walked one, and fanned six. Justin Lee threw the seventh, and while he did yield a run, he whiffed three in the frame, and the Trojans took the win 8-4.

GSC Race Update

The Trevecca win in game three of the series was a big help to West Alabama. The Tigers defeated Alabama-Huntsville on the season's final day, and with the Trojans earning a split in the double-header, the Tigers were able to finish one game ahead of Lee for the GSC title. The Flames end the year as the second seed in the GSC Championship with a 22-11 record, and the Trojans will be the six seed with a conference mark of 19-14. There is one game remaining in the GSC schedule - Delta State and Mississippi College will play a single game on Sunday. The winner of that game will finish the season in a tie with West Florida for third. The Choctaws hold the tiebreaker over the Argonauts, while UWF holds the tiebreaker over Delta State. Montevallo and UAH round out the GSC championship field as the seven and eight seeds, respectively.

NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
The Trojans will head to Oxford, Alabama on Friday, May 1 for the opening round game of the 2026 Gulf South Conference Championship. The Championship will be contested at Choccoloco Park, and it is a double-elimination format. The bracket and game times are set to be announced by the GSC office after the conclusion of Sunday's action.
