Trevecca Baseball | Whitaker's Late HR Helps Trojans Salvage Series Finale vs. DSU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. After a red-hot start to the 2026 season, the Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team has hit the skids a bit over the last three weekends. The Trojans entered play on Saturday looking to avoid dropping their third straight weekend set in GSC play, and while the Trojans had their chances, they were unable to find the timely hit in game one, and it cost the series win, though the Trojans did salvage the finale.

Trevecca (28-14, 18-9 GSC) left runners in scoring position in four different innings in game one, and they dropped the game to Delta State (23-16, 16-11) 5-4. In game two, the Trojans were able to find two key hits, including a go-ahead two run homer from Isaac Whitaker as the Trojans took the series finale, 5-3.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
DSU now leads the all-time series 5-2, with all of the meetings coming in the last three seasons. The Trojans have won the series finale in each of their two GSC series, as they took a 4-1 win in Cleveland, Mississippi last season, and the 5-3 win in Nashville on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

Cade Martin led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, and while he was retired on a fielder's choice, the lead off hit set the stage for the inning. After Caleb Webster reached on a second fielder's choice, he stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

A one-out triple allowed Delta State to tie the score in the top of the second, and in the fourth, the Statesmen inched in front with an RBI double with two away that gave DSU the 2-1 lead.

Back-to-back one-out walks to Alex Fernandez and Martin in the fifth helped set up the Trojans with a chance to reclaim the lead, and Noah Boughton reached on an error to load the bases and force the Statesmen to go to the bullpen. Miles Nelson entered the game as a pinch hitter and he immediately greeted the reliever with an RBI-single to center field, and Judson Ceyanes followed with a sacrifice fly that put Trevecca back in front 3-2.

DSU had an immediate answer in the top of the sixth, though, as another two-out RBI double plated a pair of DSU runners to give the lead back to DSU at 4-3. More two-out damage in the DSU seventh allowed the Statesmen to increase their lead to 5-3, and that proved a huge run.

Fernandez and Martin drew consecutive walks again in the Trojans' seventh, and after a fielder's choice off the bat of Boughton, Nelson drove in his second run of the game on a fielder's choice grounder that plated Fernandez to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Two walks in the Trevecca eighth inning put two on with only one out in the frame, and after a fly out from Isaac Whitaker allowed Rylan Moses to advance to third, Fernandez was retired on a ground out to short to end the threat. Parker Davis worked a scoreless ninth for the Trojans, and Trevecca threatened again in the bottom half. Martin led off the inning with a double, and Nelson was hit by a pitch to again put two on with only one away. Jaxson Christ hit a deep fly ball to center, but the ballpark held it, and while it allowed Martin to move up to third, Moses was not able to find the key hit, and the Trojans fell in the game, 5-4.

GAME 2
Martin singled to lead off the bottom of the first in game two, and Ceyanes followed by being hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no one out. Boughton followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved runners to second and third with no one out. Moses followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to give Trevecca the 2-0 lead.

Stone Collier belted a two-run homer for Delta State in the fourth, to tie the score, and in the fifth, the Statesmen inched in front as Tucker Jones beat out an infield single to drive in Austin Estes with the go-ahead tally that gave the Statesmen the 3-2 lead.

Boughton led off the Trojans' sixth with a double in the right-center gap, and he was lifted for pinch runner Wyatt Bowling. Moses followed with a perfect bunt down the third base line that he beat out for an infield single that put runners at the corners for Webster. Webster executed a safety squeeze beautifully to score Bowling, and it moved Moses into scoring position. Isaac Whitaker followed with a long two-run homer into left-center that gave Trevecca a 5-3 lead.

Trevecca turned the ball over to their closer Ryan Sweeney in the top of the seventh. Sweeney, who had pitched in some tough luck in recent outings, wasted no time in the inning. He needed only 10 pitches - nine of them for strikes - to fan Austin Estes, Landon Holliman, and Tucker Jones in succession for his eighth save of the campaign, as the Trojans held on to win 5-3.

GSC Race Update

The series loss to DSU has put the Trojans in a precarious position as far as a league title goes. The Trojans are now two games back of West Alabama, who also holds the tiebreaker with Trevecca, with only six games to play. The race for second, though, is now wide open. Trevecca and Lee are tied at 18-9 in the GSC, with Mississippi College and West Florida one game behind that duo. The Trojans hold the tiebreaker with MC and UWF, and Trevecca will host Lee in the final weekend of GSC play on April 24-25.

NEXT ON THE DIAMOND

Trevecca will hit the road for their final GSC road series of the year next weekend. The Trojans will head down I-65 to take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (17-21, 12-15 GSC). The series double-header will be on Friday at 1 p.m. with the single game on Saturday at Noon.
