Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Take Second Series of GSC Play; Split DH with Valdosta State

NASHVILLE, Tenn.   The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team continued their hot start to the 2026 season on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans picked up their second straight series win to open the Gulf South Conference season, and they accomplished a feat the team has not achieved since the 2021 season in the process.

Trevecca (9-4, 5-1 GSC) won game one over Valdosta State (4-10, 2-4 GSC) 5-2, marking the first time since 2021 the Trojans had won their first five conference games of the year. In game two, the Trojans were again competitive, but a late comeback fell just short as they dropped the series finale 3-2.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
Trevecca takes the season set from Valdosta State 2-1 in their second season in the Gulf South Conference. The two conference series are the only times the teams have met on the baseball field, and VSU now holds a slim lead in the all-time series, 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

Valdosta State struck first in the top of the second. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly put the Blazers up 2-0, but the Trojans cut the margin in half in the bottom of the frame. Cade Martin led off the inning with a walk, he moved up to second on a single from Rylan Moses, and a sacrifice from Tyler Jenkins put runners at second and third with only one out. KC Anchors followed with an RBI groundout that scored Martin, and the game remained 2-1 into the bottom of the fourth when Anchors struck again.

Anchors launched a no-doubt two-run homer with two out in the fourth that scored Moses, who had singled and stolen a base earlier in the frame. The blast gave the Trojans the lead, and they did not look back.

In the sixth, Moses led off with another single, and on the play he moved up to third on a two-base throwing error. Tyler Jenkins followed with a sacrifice fly that pushed the Trevecca lead to 4-2. Two batters later, Landon Rogers narrowly missed hitting his first collegiate home run, and he was forced to settle for a two out double. Caleb Webster looped a soft single to center as the next batter, and Rogers raced home to extend the Trojans' lead to 5-2.

That was enough for the Trojans, thanks to another outstanding effort from the pitching staff. Jonah Smithson threw six solid innings as the starter, as he allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts. Parker Davis followed with two perfect innings of relief, and Ryan Sweeney nailed down the save as he set the Blazers down in order in the ninth. Davis and Sweeney each had a pair of strikeouts, and the Trojans took the win 5-2.

GAME 2
The Blazers again struck first in game two, and again the first runs came in the top of the second frame. Three straight batters singled to open the inning against Spencer Wilkins, and an error made on the third hit proved costly. The next three batters were retired on a lineout, a fielder's choice grounder back to Wilkins, and a groundout to third, but two unearned runs had already crossed the plate, and VSU held the lead 2-0.

Valdosta State added another run in the top of the fourth, and the Trojans looked poised to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Nelson led off with a single, and Christ followed with a double that put runners at second and third with nobody out. However, Nelson was retired on a fielder's choice at the plate with the contact play on, and a double play grounded ended the threat with the game still favoring VSU 3-0.

Trevecca mounted one final charge in the seventh. Boughton hit a one-out single to right, and Nelson followed with a walk. After a flyout and a stolen base moved runners to second and third, Moses singled in two runs to cut the Trojans' deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, Trevecca was unable to finish the comeback, and the Trojans dropped the series finale 3-2.
