NASHVILLE – Jax Abernathy., a freshman guard on the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, is the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, presented by Athletic Solutions, for the week ending Sunday, February 16, 2026.
For Abernathy, this is his fourth weekly award of the season. It is his third Gulf South Freshmen of the Week honor. He also was named as the statewide player of the week by the Tennessee Sports Writers' Association (TSWA).
Trevecca is 15-9 overall and 10-8 in GSC play, sitting sixth in the conference standings after being picked eighth in the preseason coaches' poll. Their performance this week locked them into the GSC Championships for the second time. This is the second year for the Trojans in the GSC. The Trojans have made their postseason championships three years in a row when including their final year in the Great Midwest in 2023-2024
It is the eighth time a Trojan has earned the GSC Freshman of the Week honor this season. Abernathy, Fred Bailey, and Jeremy Jackson Jr. have all earned the award a combined eight times this season.

Abernathy, six-foot-four freshmen, averaged 26.0 PPG while shooting 62.1% (18-29) from the field, 36.4% (4-11) from three, 80% (12-15) from the foul line. He added five steals and five assists while leading the Trojans to a 1-1 week in league play on the road.
Over his last four games, the product of Christian Heritage High School has scored 25, 27, 30, 32 points. He's pushed his collection of 20+ point games to ten on the season.
First, the rookie guard scored 25 points with four assists and three steals in an 85-77 win at AUM.
In a narrow loss at Lee the Calhoun, Ga. native collected another 27 points against the Flames while shooting 70% (7-for-10) from the field and 92% (11-for-12) from the free throw line in a 72-68 loss at Lee.
The freshman leads the Trojans in scoring with 17.4 points per game. He's second on the team in steals, fourth in rebounding, and is third in assists and blocks.
In his first season at the helm, head coach Nate Moran has guided Trevecca to a 13-7 start. Picked eighth in the preseason, the Trojans have exceeded expectations as the season enters the final stretch.
at 2 PM.Abernathy and the Trojans return home for its final two regular-season games, beginning Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 PM, against Mississippi College (10-15, 8-12 GSC). The final home game and Senior Day are set for Saturday, Feb. 21, when Delta State (9-15, 6-13 GSC) visits
Their final two games of the regular season are on the road in West Tennessee, playing two of their longest rivals. First, is Union University (9-15, 5-13 GSC) on Wednesday, Feb. 25. A date with Christian Brothers (4-18, 3-15 GSC) on Friday, Feb. 27 completes the regular season.
The Trojans are working toward hosting a Gulf South Tournament game for the second year in a row. The GSC Quarterfinals are Monday, March 2, 2026.
