Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojan Jax Abernathy Named Gulf South Freshman of the Week, Again

NASHVILLE – Jax Abernathy., a freshman guard on the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, is the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, presented by Athletic Solutions, for the week ending Sunday, February 8, 2026.

It is the seventh time a Trojan has earned the GSC Freshman of the Week honor this season. Abernathy, Fred Bailey, and Jeremy Jackson Jr. have all earned the award a combined seven times this season.

Abernathy averaged 31 points as the Trojans picked up a big road win at West Florida, and narrowly missed getting another in a overtime loss at Valdosta State. The rookie guard went 10-for-16 (.63) for a career-high 32 points in the 81-79 road win at West Florida. He added 30 points with five rebounds and four assists in the overtime loss at Valdosta State.

This is Abernathy's second GSC Freshman of the Week award of 2025-26 as he also earned it Dec. 22. He also was named the Tennessee Sports Writer's Association Player of the Week on December 24, 2025.

Trevecca is 14-8 overall and 9-7 in GSC play, sitting fifth in the conference standings after being picked eighth in the preseason coaches' poll.

In his first season at the helm, head coach Nate Moran has guided Trevecca to a 13-7 start. Picked eighth in the preseason, the Trojans have exceeded expectations as the season enters the final stretch.

Abernathy and the Trojans will play their next two games on the road, beginning Wednesday in a makeup game at AUM (5-17, 3-13 GSC) on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Montgomery, before heading to Cleveland, Tenn., on Valentine's Day to face Lee (10-11, 7-10 GSC).

Trevecca returns home for its final two regular-season games, beginning Thursday, Feb. 19, against Mississippi College (9-13, 6-10 GSC). The final home game and Senior Day is set for Saturday, Feb. 21, when Delta State (8-13, 5-11 GSC) visits

Their final two games of the season are on the road in West Tennessee, playing two of their longest rivals. First, is Union University (9-12, 5-10 GSC) on Wednesday, Feb. 25. A date with Christian Brothers (4-15, 3-12 GSC) on Friday, Feb. 27 will complete the regular season.

The Trojans are working toward hosting a Gulf South Tournament game for the second year in a row. The GSC Quarterfinals are Monday, March 2, 2026.
