Trevecca Cross Country | Three Personal Bests Highlight UAH Finale Ahead of Home GSC Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University cross country teams completed their regular-season schedule Saturday at the UAH Chargers XC Invitational at John Hunt Cross Country Park, using a selective lineup to fine-tune preparations for the Gulf South Conference Championships at their home course Nov. 6.

Junior Caleb Hinson led six Trojan men over 8,000 meters, while junior Sarah Gwen Arnold and freshman Sarah Penney established personal-best times in the women's 6,000-meter race. Junior Harley Kirkpatrick also delivered a significant personal best in his first competition of the season.

Trevecca finished 33rd among 40 scoring men's teams with 1,020 points. The women entered three individuals and did not qualify for a team score. The UAH meet drew a combined 47 competing programs, with 460 men in the 8K field and 373 scoring finishers in the women's 6K.

"I thought today was really good for our group, and I was happy with how we executed," Trevecca Head Coach Kate Bucknam said. "We approached this meet with a purpose, and I thought our athletes did a good job of making the most of the opportunity. It was a solid day and a good momentum boost as we head into these final two weeks before conference."

"Harley had a significant personal best in his first race of the season, which was really encouraging. Sarah Gwen Arnold and Sarah Penney both had big personal bests on the women's side as well. We're excited to regroup with the rest of the team and should be close to full strength for conference. We have a couple more weeks to sharpen things up, and we're looking forward to being back together and racing at home."

Arnold delivered Trevecca's top women's performance, finishing 188th in 23:44.3 for a new 6K personal best. Her previous career mark of 24:09.3 came at the 2025 Gulf South Conference Championships. Saturday's effort lowered that standard by exactly 25 seconds.

Penney placed 271st in 24:51.6, also setting a personal best. The freshman shaved 1:29.8 from her previous 6K best of 26:21.4, set at the Lewis Crossover on Oct. 10.

Senior Hailey Carmichael finished 364th in 30:38.4, completing Trevecca's three-runner entry. The Trojans did not record a women's team score because the minimum of five runners is required.

UP NEXT: TROJANS HOST GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE HERMITAGE

Trevecca will host the 2026 Gulf South Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Friday, Nov. 6, at Andrew Jackson's The Hermitage Cross Country Course in Hermitage, Tennessee. The conference's teams will compete for GSC titles in the men's 8K and women's 6K, with individual honors also on the line.

The championship brings Gulf South Conference cross country to Trevecca's home venue for the first time. On Sept. 26, the Trojans hosted the Michael Pretorius Invitational, the first collegiate meet and first collegiate 8K contested at The Hermitage. The event gave Trevecca an early competitive look at the same course it will race in the postseason.

The historic property was home to Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, and is now a National Historic Landmark. The course uses open fields and rolling terrain, with an uphill approach to the finish. Its layout provides several opportunities for spectators to follow the runners during both championship races.

The postseason continues with the NCAA Division II South Region Championships on Nov. 21 in Huntsville, Alabama.
