Trevecca Men's Basketball | TSWA Tips Trojan Abernathy as Statewide Player of the Week

NASHVILLE – Jax Abernathy, a freshman guard on the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 21, 2025.

A native of Calhoun, Georgia, Abernathy averaged 21.0 points per game in a pair of home Gulf South Conference contests at Trojan Fieldhouse.

Abernathy, who played for fellow Trevecca alum Tyler Watkins at Christian Heritage High School, shot 55.2 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three-point range, and 71.4 percent at the free-throw line during the week. He also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.

The 6-foot-4 guard scored 21 points against preseason No. 25 NABC and preseason No. 2 GSC Valdosta State, then followed with 22 points against West Florida. Against the VSU Blazers, Abernathy shot 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from the floor and 57.1 percent (4-for-7) from beyond the arc.
Abernathy has now recorded four 20-point or more performances in his first season on the Hill.

For the year, the freshman leads the Trojans in scoring at 15.7 points per game. He has connected on at least one three-pointer in all but two games and is averaging 2.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per contest.

Trevecca's 36-point victory (107–71) over Valdosta State marked the first time the storied Blazer program has suffered a loss of 30 or more points since the 2011–12 season. In fact, Valdosta State had not lost by 36 or more points since 1993.

As a team, TNU knocked down 18 three-pointers against the Blazers—one shy of a school record.
On Saturday, the Trojans rallied from 19 points down against West Florida, cutting the deficit to two late before falling 82–78.

?Abernathy was honored on Monday as the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, it is the third time this season a Trojan has earned the honor this season. Fred Bailey previously received the honor on November 18 and November 25.

Trevecca enters the holiday break 7–4 overall and 3–3 in Gulf South play. Picked eighth in the 2025–26 GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Trojans currently sit sixth in the league standings.

The Trojans have posted several notable wins this season, including road victories over No. 21 UAH and Tusculum, along with home wins over preseason NABC No. 25 Valdosta State and Embry-Riddle.

Trevecca returns to action on New Year's Eve, hosting longtime NAIA rival Cumberland University at 2 p.m. The Trojans will then open 2026 slate at home against another longtime rival, Lee University, on Sunday, January 4, at 4 p.m. at Trojan Fieldhouse.
