MASON, Ohio – The 2023 Great Midwest South Division Champion Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (29-20) lost their opening postseason game at the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. The seventh-seeded Ohio Dominican University Panthers (25-25) upset the second-seeded Trojans 4-2 on Wednesday at Prasco Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the third. Both teams had earlier chances, but pitching and defense kept the baserunners from crossing home plate. ODU added a run in the top of the fifth and sixth for a 4-0 lead. The Trojans were held to just one hit at that point.

Trevecca finally broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Andru Becker doubled to left center, driving in Henry Mosley and Josh Griffin. Unfortunately, the Trojan bats went silent over their final three at-bats, and the Panthers won for the second time in a row in the series.

MOUND AND BOX NOTES

Andru Becker is the only Trojan with multiple hits, going 2-3 with a double and two RBI.

Jacob Lester reached on a walk and advanced on a stolen base.

Matthew Hock came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES

Trevecca leads the all-time series 15-5, but ODU has won two in a row in the series.

SEASON REVIEW

The Trojans were picked to win the Great Midwest South Division in the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Preseason Under Armor Coaches' Poll.

The Trojan's 2023 season did not start as they would have wanted against a high-profile schedule, losing their first seven games. However, the Trojans got turned the page and began to put together some wins going 5-2 over the next seven before moving to conference play. When the Great Midwest schedule came, the Trojans got hot. Trevecca took three of four from Hillsdale during the G-MAC opening weekend. In April, Purple and White won 17 of 22 games in the month.

Trevecca took six of the eight conference series. Walsh took three of four from the Trojans, and the Findlay series ended in a 2-2 split.

The Trojans enter the 2023 postseason winning eight out of their last ten games.

The Trojans have seven batters with a .300 or higher batting average.

Joey Parliment leads the Trojans in several categories, including home runs (8). Josh Griffin and Bryant Goolsby are second in home runs with seven each. Griffin leads the Trojans with 39 RBI, while Henry Mosley has 30. Griffin leads the team with 11 doubles and 12 stolen bases.

Jack Keele leads the pitching staff with seven wins (7-2) and a 2.74 earned run average. He has five complete games and one complete game shutout. He has 66 strikeouts against only 15 walks (no hit by pitch). Matthew Hock has six saves and a 3-1 record. Hock has a 2.82 ERA. Elijah Pleasants is 5-4 with 81 strikeouts and a complete game. Caleb Marks is 4-4 with 66 strikeouts and only 15 walks (no hit-by-pitch). Mason Wells is 5-0 with a total of five starts on the season. He has 26 strikeouts in 27.0 innings pitched.

GREAT MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

Six times the Trojans have won the regular-season title, and four times have earned the tournament championship. They won the first three regular-season and postseason championships.

This is the eleventh season for Trevecca with an NCAA Division II schedule.
