Trevecca Baseball | Cooper Whitt Walks Off In 11th Inning As Trojans Beat Panthers

NASHVILLE- Trevecca Nazarene University baseball (16-14, 11-5 Great Midwest) finished up their four-game series against the visiting Kentucky Wesleyan College (11-19, 6-8 Great Midwest), winning in game three 4-0 (seven innings), then they won in game four of the series 3-2 (11 innings).

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The Trojans have the all-time series lead of 22-14. The Panthers won the previous meeting last season against the Trojans, a 14-2 loss in eight innings in the first game of the 2022 Great Midwest Championships on May 11, 2022. The Trojans won last year's regular season series 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME THREE:

After a scoreless first inning and a half, the Trojan's offense began to click as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. It started off when Jacob Lester hit a two-RBI single that brought in David Milam and Bryant Goolsby for scores. Then Cooper Whitt reached home on a sacrifice flyout by Henry Mosley

Then in the fifth inning, Cooper Whitt hit a solo home run to make it 4-0. Meanwhile, Caleb Marks and the Trojan outfield completely shut down the Panther's offense. Marks didn't allow a run on only three hits while striking out eight batters to seal the win.

GAME FOUR:

Kentucky Wesleyan struck first with a single run in the top of the first inning with a solo home run. The Trojans responded in the third inning when Joey Parliment hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. 

Following the homer, both teams struggled to take advantage of their hits, leading to three scoreless innings. Then in the seventh inning, Kentucky Wesleyan finally broke through with an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. 

The Trojans were held without a run during the seventh and eighth innings. Then in the ninth inning, Josh Seiler reached first on a hit, then he was advanced to second on a sac bunt. After he reached third on a Cooper Whitt sacrifice ground out, Garrett Smith came in to pinch run for him. Smith reached home to tie the game at 2-2 on an error by the Panthers.

After a scoreless 10th inning, Cooper Whitt was walked and then advanced to third base after a pair of sacrifice ground outs. Then a wild pitch brought in Cooper Whitt for the score and the win.

CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES GAME ONE:

  • Jacob Lester went 2-2 with two RBIs.
  • Cooper Whitt went 1-2 with a home run, an RBI, and one run scored.
  • David Milam went 1-2 with one run scored.
  • Caleb Marks (4-2) pitched a complete game, did not allow a run on only three hits, and struck out eight batters.

UP NEXT

The next game on the schedule is a single game against Alabama-Huntsville (19-15) on Wednesday at 5:00 PM on the Hill. The Chargers have the all-time lead in the series, 9-5, but the Trojans took last season's meeting on February 16, 2022, 11-7 in Alabama.

After that, the Trojans will go on the road for a four-game series against Cedarville University (7-21, 3-9 Great Midwest) on April 14-15. Trevecca is 37-6 in the all-time series with Cedarville. They split last year's season series 2-2.
