Trevecca Softball | Trojans, Winners of 11 in a Row, Sweep Malone; Host Ashland Friday

CANTON, Ohio. – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (18-8, 4-0 Great Midwest) swept a doubleheader with Malone University (6-12, 0-4 Great Midwest). The Trojans won 4-0 and 12-1 and have now won 11 in a row and 13 of their last 14 outings.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The Trojans are 11-5 versus Malone all-time and have won five of the last six in the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE NOTES:

The game was scoreless till the Trojans plated three in the top of the third inning. Kyleigh Burgett reached home on a fielder's choice from a Jessie Brown bunt. Then Brown stole home just ahead of a Kendall Andrews solo home run.

Trevecca added a run in the top of the fourth for a 4-0 lead, which eventually was the final score.

In the circle, Ashlan Sensing pitched lights out, striking out a season-high 11 batters. Sensing, along with Rylee Veron and the Trojan outfield, shutout the Pioneers on seven hits.

GAME TWO NOTES:

The Trojan momentum continued in game two, scoring two runs in the first and second innings.

Trevecca added three in the third, two in the fourth, and three more in the fifth.

Anna Bennett hit a two-run home run, driving in Jessie Brown, in the first.

In the second inning, Savannah Davis scored on a Kyleigh Burgett RBI double and Burgett scored on a fielder's choice for a 4-0 advantage.

The Trojan runs kept coming as Carly Sperlich hit a solo home run in the third inning. Kyleigh Burgett hit a two-RBI single, scoring in Sarah Nicholson and Alex Skinner for a 7-0 TNU lead.

In the fourth inning, Alyssa Triner hit a two-RBI double to make it 9-0.

Malone finally got on the board in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 9-1, but Trevecca added a final three runs in the fifth.

Alex Behnke (6-3) picked up the win with four innings of work and Brianna Asmondy pitched a scoreless fifth.

GAME ONE- CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES

  • Sarah Nicholson went 2-3 with a double and one run scored.
  • Kyleigh Burgett went 1-3 with a triple, an RBI, and one run scored.
  • Anna Bennett went 2-4 and added another double to her team leading totals.
  • Ashlan Sensing (8-4) did not allow a run on seven hits while striking out 11 Pioneers in six innings pitched.

GAME TWO - CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES

  • Trevecca had 11 hits with six extra base hits and two home runs.
  • Anna Bennett went 2-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. She added a home run.
  • Kendall Andrews continued carrying a hot bat, going 1-2 with three RBI, a triple, and two walks. She also added another stolen base.
  • Kyleigh Burgett went 3-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. She had a double.
  • Alex Behnke went four innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. She scattered three hits.

UP NEXT

The Trojans return home, this Friday (March 31), to host Ashland University (7-17, 1-3 Great Midwest) for a double-header. The Trojans are 4-1 all-time against the Eagles.

On Saturday, April 1, the Trojans host Northwood University at 1 PM for a two-game set.

Trevecca is 3-1 versus Northwood (18-11, 2-2 Great Midwest).

Trevecca's next doubleheader is versus Lee University (7-23) on Tuesday, April 4 starting at 2:00 PM.

Trevecca is 6-8 versus the Flames in the NCAA Division II era. TNU took the last meeting with LU 14-8, that was in 2019.
