Trevecca Softball | Trojans Come Up Just Short of a Title, Fall to UWA 5-3

OXFORD, Ala. A magical week at the 2026 Gulf South Conference Championships ended for the Trevecca Nazarene University softball team on Saturday, as the Trojans battled the West Alabama Tigers for the GSC title. Trevecca entered the tournament as the final team to make the field, yet through the first three days of play, coach Ben Tyree's bunch found ways to keep winning, earning a shot to keep their season going. On Saturday, though, the clock struck midnight on their Cinderella run.

Trevecca (22-19) fell into an early hole, as UWA (43-12-1) scored four runs with two outs in the first two innings on their way to the win for the trophy. Trevecca rallied in the second half of the game, but they stranded the tying runs aboard in the sixth, and UWA took the win and the title, 5-3.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES
The win gives UWA the upper hand in the all-time series. The Tigers won three of the four meetings between the clubs in 2026, pushing them to a 4-3 all-time series lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Addy Grace Summers led off the game with a single for the Trojans, but she was retired on a fielder's choice when Shay Hollingsworth tried to sacrifice her into scoring position. Trevecca was unable to get the run into scoring position, and the Tigers capitalized in the bottom of the first.

A check-swing single up the middle for the Tigers was followed by a one-out double to left field that gave UWA the lead, 1-0. On the play, ShaKeira Washington advanced to third on an attempted play at the plate on Haley Shannon, and Washington came home on a sacrifice fly to double the Tigers' lead.

UWA plated three more runs with two outs in the second frame, on a pair of softly hit liners to right field to push their lead to 5-0.

Meanwhile, Megan Roe settled in for the Tigers in the circle. Roe allowed the lead-off single in the first, and while she had only one strikeout in the first three innings, she recorded eight ground ball outs as she retired nine Trojans in a row.

UWA threatened again in the third, as they got runners to the corners with only one out, but Bailey Goad buckled down and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep the deficit at five runs.

In the fourth, Trevecca was able to find a chink in the armor of Roe in the circle. Hollingsworth led off the inning with a single up the middle, and one out later, Sarah Kinderdine doubled over the head of right fielder Haley Shannon to put runners at second and third with one out. Annalise Mecklenberg stepped in the box and lined the first pitch she saw into left-center that drove in Hollingsworth and Kinderdine to get the Trojans within three at 5-2.

A one-out double from Kyleigh Burgett turned into a run for the Trojans in the top of the fifth as well. Burgett moved up to third on a ground out from Summers, and Hollingsworth reached on an error that allowed Burgett to score and pull Trevecca within two at 5-3.

Trevecca got the tying runs on base in the top of the sixth with a pair of walks, but the Trojans were unable to push the runs across, and Trevecca went in order in the seventh, as they saw their season end in a 5-3 defeat in the GSC Championship game.
