The Trevecca / Bryan game is the first meeting for the two Volunteer state schools in 54 years. The teams first an only previous meeting came in Trevecca's second season of men's basketball and intercollegiate athletics. Bryan won Dec. 15, 1969 meeting 81-55 on a neutral court at a Christmas Tournament.
Trevecca jumped into the NCAA D2SIDA Midwest Region poll for the first time in the polls history (started in 2019-2020) at No. 10 two weeks ago. Last week, the 6-3 Trojans moved up to No. 6 in the poll. In today's poll, despite not playing any games over Finals, the Trojans are No. 8.
The 2023-2024 statistics show vast improvement for these Trojans over a year ago. They have already equaled the wins in a season for the program since the 2017-2018 season.
The program had the lowest scoring average in all of NCAA Division II a season ago, this year they are No. 29 in scoring average at 86.6 points per game nationally and are the top scoring team in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The team leads the Great Midwest in five different offensive categories.
Jalen Page, the Lee University transfer, is a big piece of the turnaround for first-year head coach
Kevin Carroll. Page, who is second in the G-MAC averaging 19.8 points per game, has help, there are three other players averaging in double figures – Jamal Cannady (15.8), Pete Lambesis Jr. (13.3), and
Tommy Gankhuyag (12.2).
The 6-3 record is the best start for a Trojan team in the NCAA Division II era. The last team with a better start was the 2009-2010 team started 8-1.
The 3-0 Great Midwest start is the best for the Trojans in their history with the G-MAC. The Trojans and Kentucky Wesleyan are the only two remaining teams undefeated in league play this year.
The Trojans beat two teams in the league for the first time. They defeated Findlay, 96-90, to open G-MAC play. It is Trevecca's first win over Findlay, the Oilers had won the first 15 meetings.
Trevecca beat recent G-MAC newcomer Northwood for the first time, 103-71, to go to 2-0 in the G-MAC. It was Trevecca's first win over the Timberwolves who won the first two meetings last year.
For their third league win, TNU beat Malone, 69-65 on the road, breaking a four-game winning streak for the Pioneers in the series. Malone had won 10 of the first 12 meetings.
The Trojans set two records in the win over NU. They set an all-time (NAIA/NCAA) record with 19 made three-pointers and set an NCAA D2 era record with a 67.9% three-point. The Trojans were 19-of-28 from three. Breaking a record held by the 2018-19 team, a squad that hit 18 in a game twice.
They just missed another NCAA era record against the Wolves. Their 24 assists are one short of the record.
Jalen Page earned the Great Midwest Player of the Week honor twice in back-to-back weeks. He also was selected the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week once this year. Over a two week and four game stretch
Jalen Page averaged 26 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while shooting 55% (31-56) from the field, 55% (15-27) from three, and 93% (27-29) from the foul line. He has two 31-point games during the stretch.
Trevecca has broken the century mark twice this season, the last time a Trevecca eclipsed the century mark before this season was a 117-94 win over Ohio Valley University more than ten years ago on December 7, 2013, the first year in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
The three-overtime game against CBU is the first time the Trojans have gone past regulation since 2018 when they played back-to-back overtime games against Ohio Dominican (2/01/18) and Cedarville (2/03/18). Both losses by the Trojans. The Trojans didn't wait that long to go to overtime again, beating Shorter 84-80 in overtime three nights later, Nov. 21 in Rome, Ga.
The Bryan College game is the first to two in a row against in state teams who are members of the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Trevecca starts post-Christmas play on Saturday, December 30 with Milligan College visiting Trojan Fieldhouse at 3:00 PM,
