Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (6-3) finished the Lee University Invitational by splitting a pair of matches on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Washburn University (8-0) and a 3-0 win to tournament hosts Lee University (2-6) in Paul Dana Walker Arena.
THE SERIES
Trevecca and Washburn played for the first time ever today. The undefeated and nationally ranked No. 2 Ichabods now control the 1-0 series lead.
Lee has controlled the all-time series against the Trojans, with the record being 8-35. The Trojans win breaks a Lee five match win streak, and is the first win for the Trojans since 2014.
No. 2 WASHBURN MATCH – 25-20, 25-20, 25-21
The Trojans faced a challenging task on Saturday in the first of their two matches. Despite the Trojans' best efforts to keep the match close, the No. 2 Ichabods never trailed in the opener. In fact, a 5-0 run by Washburn seemed to put the set out of reach at 21-13 before the Trojans responded with a 5-0 run of their own. Both teams traded two points to finish off the first, 25-20.
The second set saw Washburn gain control early, but the Trojans used a 5-0 run to tie the set at 10-10. From there, the Ichabods never surrendered the lead again to win the set, 25-20.
In the third, Trevecca pushed ahead for its first and only lead of the match. Down 8-7, an attack error and then a service ace brought the Trojans ahead 9-8. Later, after an Emma Grace Rosson kill made it 21-20, the Ichabods won four of the last five points to win, 25-21.
Emma Grace Rosson collected a team-best 12 kills with a .500 hitting percentage to lead the way for the Trojans. Trevecca managed nine service aces to the Ichabods' six. Washburn edged Trevecca .336 to .275 in attacking percentage.
LEE MATCH – 25-19, 25-21, 25-18
Game two on the day was a close affair, as the first set was heavily contested, with neither team getting more than a three-point lead. The Trojans finished off the first set on an 8-2 run to claim the first set.
The same was the case for the second set, which was even more contested. The Trojans fell behind 14-11 but climbed back to make it a tie game at 15-15. The Trojans built up a 22-17 lead before Lee charged back late in the set, but the Trojans held off the rally and finished the set 25-21.
The Trojans claimed the first three points in the third set, but then Lee fought back to keep the set close. The teams were tied on seven different occasions in the third set. On the last occasion, when the game was tied at 15, the Trojans scored five straight points and never looked back and finished the set 25-18.
